Two Snoozles, September 1968

Today's Snoozles™ aren't that bad compared to some, but they're a little boring.

How about a closeup of faux flowers at the Flower Market? It's almost like looking into a tide pool full of anemones. A tide pool with a spinning wheel, right? That candelabra thingy is interesting, I wonder if that was for sale too? "I must have it! I'll give you one million dollars for it!". "I'm sorry sir, we don't care about money here in Disneyland". "Aw, sauerkraut".

Next is this perfectly-OK shot of Sleeping Beauty Castle. The lamps in the foreground would have done wonders for a stereo photo, but this is a dang mono photo. Meanwhile, there's THE STAIN, but we can't see THE DENT.

This is a nice picture. Although, the colors don't seem as vibrant as one would expect. But that slight dinginess gives it an antique look. And yes! They DO look like sea anemones in a tide pool! I like the small teacup-sized bouquets of tiny blooms. And we can see what appears to be hydrangeas in the background. I suppose it is appropriate that these are fake flowers. Disney excels at fake stuff; it's their stock in trade. Everything they do is 'fake'; an illusuion.

I suppose you're right about there being no Dent here, but I'm trying hard to convince myself that I can see it a bit anyway. A couple of those scaleless trees are as big as the Matterhorn! This one is also a nice picture. The photographer obviously tried to get an artsy composition here. It would've looked even better if the foreground lamppost was a liitle shorter, so as not to compete with the Castle. I don't see any Killer Swans, but we know they're lurking nearby.

These would have fit in just fine on any un-Snoozle day. Thanks, Major.

We had a spinning wheel planter exactly like the one in that first pic! I think my parents bought it in Colonial Williamsburg. My mom sold it some years back, when she and my aunt had a space in an antique mall. Too bad. I could sell it today on ebay, using this photo and claiming that it came from Disneyland! ;-)

We can't see the dent in the Castle roof, but we can see the dent in the top of the Matterhorn.

Thanks for the Snoozles, Major!

I like these pics. The Flower Market image has shade in the background which makes the flowers in front seem even more illuminated.

The second image has nice composition with the lamppost in front, castle in the middle and Matterhorn in back. I can see and feel the depth even without a stereo view.

Thanks, Major.

I agree with my fellow Junior Gorillas, these are very nice pictures and need no apologies.

I very much like the autumn toned flower arrangement. I see spider chrysanthemums and regular chrysanthemums, snapdragons, and hydrangeas, all of which we had in our garden, and some others I can’t identify. Yes, we know they are fake, that’s why we enjoy them so much, like the hippos in the Jungle Cruise. I’m sure that candelabra thing was for sale, and it would be expensive too.

And a perfectly fine photo of the Castle too. Everything appears well-composed, in focus, color is good, no spires cut off. All in all, quite nice. Bonus for the weird stain on the wall, which persists to this day. The more I think about it, it’s probably condensate from a furnace. Mine at home has a little vent pipe coming out of the wall that drips water when the furnace runs. The condensate is somewhat acidic as it has etched the sidewalk and made a little estuary on the way to the flower bed. The rooms in the Castle surely need heat and probably air conditioning too, and AC generates water in a similar way. Just one more odd little quirk that GDB has taken to heart. I think it’s funny because nearly everything in the Park is so carefully orchestrated that it’s unusual to see a mundane thing like this, and most guests never notice because of all the big amazing things.

Thanks Major!

The flower market is giving off "me" vibes....mine is that full too! In lieu of a spinning wheel (weird) I have a panoply of other garden-y things....I'm not sure if "spinning wheel" says "garden" to me: but it looks like to someone it does. Those cast iron tables are cool. I've had many chances to buy them, and despite that I want them...they are just TOO HEAVY to even get into my car. I settled for a hybrid steel/glass/etc. Easier to move about in the yard. I'd like to have that outdoor standing candelabra .... I'm sure at night those amber shades give off a wonderful glow. I'm not a huge fake flower guy...in fact: I'm not one at all. For this to be "authentic" it would cost a fortune for the stems...and in the Anaheim heat: would need to be constantly replaced. I remember for an Easter commercial they rented a bunch of Easter flowers: like tulips and daffodils and such...I'll say that it is so pretty when it's natural: but the cost: "eeesh". The Castle looks lovely....and the drawbridge so nice without it's "horsey" out of scale new elements for "safety". I get it...but I don't get it. I'm glad I'm from a time that was less litigious than what goes on today. At least I got to experience things without feeling like I was an egg or a peach about to be bruised....quite the opposite in fact. The light standard gives off a "Plaza Gardens" vibe...and I guess that makes sense! The light standards in front of the Castle out of the frame to the right are really amazing....next time you are there take a look. Word on the street now is that the drawbridge DOES work still (?) I dunno....I remember in '83 it took a while for them to re-engineer it from '55. To get it to work now: sounds like $$. It would be kind of fun to make the drawbridge part of rope drop every morning. Anything is possible....with money. Thanks Major for the Snoozles.

JB, slides can vary so much, color-wise, depending on the year, the film stock, how they were stored, etc. I’m wondering if they all looked great when brand new, and the 50 years(ish) has caused then all to show their flaws? I couldn’t point out a hydrangea for a million dollars, even though I know my mom used to grow them. Perhaps the dent is visible, I don’t really see it, but now I realize that the turret in question is there, and maybe it’s just the usual flat lighting that’s the problem?

TokyoMagic!, I always thought spinning wheels were cool. Didn’t the one your mom had get ruined by being outdoors? Maybe your mom owned Martha Washington’s spinning wheel and she didn’t even know it! I never noticed the dent in the top of the Matterhorn. Actually, when did they build a Matterhorn at Disneyland??

K. Martinez, see? You’re finding the silver lining, which I appreciate! It’s funny, I thought about stereo photos with the second image too, it looks like it was totally set up for a 3D camera.

JG, I think the “autumn toned” arrangement was probably much more vibrant in real life, but this slide was a bit faded. It still looks pretty though! Why are snapdragons called “snapdragons” anyway? Do they snap? I’m sure any home that has a AC has a drippy pipe somewhere. My mom’s was set up to fill a little metal tub, which I just discovered was full of mosquito larvae, so… out it goes. We all know about the rooms in the castle that contain the wonderful dioramas, but I wonder if there are other secret rooms that the public doesn’t know about? “Lilly’s apartment”??

Bu, there are homes in our area that have some weird garden ornaments, especially these terrible bronze sculptures that were surely expensive, but are so tacky. A boy reading a book, while a bird perches on his head. Only the boy looks like he is from another planet, his features are so “off”. Another one must be by the same artist, it has a Huck Finn type holding a frog. My mom has a cast iron bench that goes all the way back to my great grandmother’s home in Aurora, Illinois, that thing is HEAVY. My sister and I just repainted it to keep rust at bay, but it looks like it will easily last another century at least. Fake flowers have their place, a nice lady gave my mom a fake orchid in a pot filled with crumbled tree bark, and it fools many visitors. My mom loves that she doesn’t have to do anything to it! I hate the changes made to the bridge (etc), but we’ve all heard stories about people wanting to sue Disney for spurious reasons, it probably happens more often than we even know. So they have to nip things in the bud, so to speak.

^ Major, that’s why they’re called “snapdragons.” We used to do that, as kids. :o)

^ Cool! I never knew you could do that to a snapdragon bloom. Thanks, Sue.

Major, it was always kept indoors!

Sue, thanks for the video explainer. I did this all the time too.
