The Mark Twain SNOOZLES™
Today's photos might be Snoozles, but you know what? They're pretty Snoozles. And as we all know, the most important thing in life is to be pretty. These are both from slides date-stamped "November 1957".
There she goes, the Mark Twain. You can tell that this is the Mark I Mark Twain because it doesn't have a bubble dome. Those passengers looking over the stern rail are worried about the AEDs following closely, hoping for fresh meat. Why do Animatronic Exploding Ducks need meat? Nobody knows. This beautiful sunny day with wispy clouds gives us a nice look at the western shore of Tom Sawyer Island and Fort Wilderness.
Another pretty Snoozle is a familiar (too familiar?) shot looking over at the loading dock for the paddlewheeler. Is it possible to be a POSTCARD WORTHY Snoozle??

Oh my god! With all those AEDs on the hunt you know it isn't going to end well. They're like cluster bombs! That line of four ducks closest to the Mark Twain are preparing to ram the side of the boat and rupture the hull!

Tiana's Showboat looks beautiful in these Sunday Snoozles™. The only thing that could make it look better, is if they were to paint it a nice shade of puce. Soon, hopefully.
JB, I'm imagining one of the guests aboard the Mark Twain, looking down at those four ducks/coots and saying in an Idy voice (or was it Ody?), "They're going to ram us!"
Even if there hadn’t been a date stamp, you can tell these are from 1957 due to all of the red jackets in view.
Aside from the lack of a bubble dome, you can also identify this as the Mark I by the location of the staircases. The Mark II’s rear-most staircases are located farther aft.
Although I love the heavily-wooded version of TSI, I alway enjoy seeing photos like the second one, with Fort Wilderness so prominent in its commanding position atop that natural hill. That outcropping must have been a pain to farm around.
Wow - that’s a good-sized murder of AEDs! Although the guests are pretty safe here since in 1957 they only had limited animation. A much fuller range of motion was introduced in 1963 with the opening of the Enchanted Tiki Boom.
Ah, excellent views of the soon-to-be “Bayou Queen”. I wonder which parts will be painted yellow?
I can almost make out the label on the crate on the dock, right above the lobster trap, something about “duck parts”.

I think both of today's pics are postcard worthy. I do favor the first pic for its great long view of the Rivers of America.
If Disney fully utilized that synergy thing, they could pipe in musical songs on the Mark Twain like "Just Around the River Bend" from Pocahontas plus "Down in New Orleans" and "Gonna Take You There" from The Princess and the Frog. I mean, Who's this Tom Sawyer and Davy Crockett? ;-)

JB, luckily an armored Keelboat swept in at the last moment and detonated all of the AEDs right after this photo was taken. But somehow more keep appearing! Some say they found a shard of one that had the name “Knott” on it, but I think that’s just a mean rumor. I would definitely want some pure nacho cheese powder, that stuff is delicious.

Chuck, now that you mention it, you CAN tell the date by the red jackets! I refuse to look at the rear-most part of the Mark Twain, it’s just not decent. And I’m with you, I love seeing TSI (and the rest of Frontierland) when the trees and shrubs were scrawny, especially since it only looked that way for a short time. “Enchanted Tiki Boom”, OUCH.
JG, it won’t be so much “yellow” as it will be a sort of “pumpkin” color. Which is fitting, since it is almost pumpkin spice season! My car loves pumpkin spice Pennzoil. “Goin’ against the grain”, OUCH.
K. Martinez, I actually thought that, for a short while, the Mark Twain DID play “Just Around the River Bend”. But I probably just imagined it. And everyone knows that Davy Crockett is a celebrity chef.
I'm surprised nobody noticed [or mentioned] that hiding amongst those AED's is the baby AEMD (Animatronic Exploding Maleficent Dragon). It's trying, unsuccessfully, to blend in. We witnessed its terror, here, this past April.
And there goes the popcorn///to feed the coots. Oh we always harassed them when working the Canoes. They got NO respect. As for both of these being "snoozies"...I wouldn't mind snoozing on a park bench for a few minutes just enjoying the peace and quiet of the times. With the MT whistle blowing at times to take me back in my imagination to an earlier time. KS

KS, coots have taken over the local park, which used to be populated mostly with mallards. They also make a mess of the golf course that my brother likes to use, so we have little love for coots! I agree, I would happily step into these photos for five minutes, or a few hours.
Letting the boat see her reflection in the water makes her feel less lonely.
Major is correct : “just around the riverbend” did play on the MARK TWAIN narration soundtrack in the 90’s when Disneyland marketing was pushing Pocahontas …. The friendly Indian village was altered a bit to become “ Powhatan” and in front of the Frontierland Entrance stockade a Powhatan village was set up. Walt Disney World did the same thing with their friendly Indian village that features a double view from the river & the WDRR - it was “ Powhatan -ized” …. For DL and WDW this was historically and graphically inaccurate … by about 1,000 miles and 200 years ….. if you think it isn’t a major theme-flaw then imagine ancient Roman chariots replacing the Main Street vehicles and 1969 hippies inside Pirates of the Caribbean ….
Or wooded barrels in Liberty Square that read “Death Valley Salt Works” …. Oh wait that happened.

I also apologize for yesterdays hijacking of your Kodak joke.
They shut down Englishtown Raceway here in NJ, so I think running nitro-fueled funny cars down Main Street might be just what the Magic Kingdom in Florida needs to replace the missing nighttime parade.
