Parade & Subs, July 1971

I'm down to the last pair of slides from a July, 1971 batch. They make for an odd couple, but I don't think there will be too many complaints.

First is this shot of a parade in progress; I'm a little discombobulated; would the castle be to our left? I was thinking that the trees in the center were part of the hub. (Fun fact: "hub" is shortened from "hubbabubba").

Zooming in, we can see Alice, along with her pals the Mad Hatter and the White Rabbit, while the Walrus loiters in the background, probably eating some baby oysters. A groovy marching band with red jackets and white pants follows close behind.

Notice the guy in the tree!

And here's a familiar view of a Submarine (the "Skate") emerging from the dark ride portion of the Submarine Voyage attraction. I love a good waterfall, and this has the main cascade, along with smaller baby falls next to it. The Peoplemover raises the score of this photo by 22.7356933 percent!

Major-
Wouldn't the castle be to the right-? (Now we've covered all the bases). That Submarine shot is a beauty-!

Thanks, Major.

Yes, the Castle would be behind the bushes on the right. The Alpine Gardens (former site of the House of the Future) would be to the left, and the Matterhorn would be behind the person that took the photo.

Is the lady to the left of Alice, wearing hot pants and high heels? Or is that a miniskirt?

Today, the Disneyland parade police would be giving that guy in the tree a firm talking to!

The girl to the left of Alice may use Nair. Cuz "If you dare wear short shorts, Nair for short shorts".

What's the deal-io with the empty Peoplemover? July and 2+ empty cars.
It's a disgrace.

Nice pics today, thanks.

Actually, the castle was down for two weeks for annual maintenance. During the pre-Pressler era, they actually wheeled it backstage after hours to prevent guests from having to see any unsightly scaffolding.

More July 1971 photos without me in them. I'm beginning to wonder if my life is completely made up.

I love the sub picture! I remember riding this when I was 11. I was totally taken in by the simple effects! I had no idea that we weren't really diving! Using a show building for the deepest depths was beyond brilliant, especially with the splashing waterfalls and bubbles making for a realistic "dive" and "surface" sequence! Pure genius!

Well, it's 1971 and what were we thinking fashion faux pas begins now. I love the putrid green pants suit on the left. And to our right, get a load of Ali Macgraw in the white bell bottoms. The kid on the right has a Henry Fonda On Golden Pond hat that rivals the Hatter himself. And Finally, why was Disney attempting to make the band into Pat Boone lookalikes? But seriously, that Skate photo is beyond beautiful and the Peoplemover in the background is to die for. Now where did I put my purple Huggiebear hat?

Great! Now I've got the old Hubba Bubba Bubble Gum jingle in my head. Thanks, Major!

Chuck, For some reason, I was under the impression that you were a fictional character. ;-)

Of all the gazillion photos you've shared, that is the first I remember with the sub emerging through the waterfalls. Great photo!

Parades were certainly simpler then but still enjoyed by our less sophisticated selves. No electronic sounds or dazzling lights. Just a pretty Alice and some characters and a band.

I think the tree vantage point was an extra charge or maybe an A-coupon?

Happy Valentines Day to all,

dz

Disney will soon be selling one-hour tree vantage points for $1,000 per person. That comes with a "Dreams & Wishes" dessert plate of course.

Nanook, I honestly did not know… I thought the photo was taken on the west side of the castle, looking south. But seeing TokyoMagic’s comment, he agrees with you!

TokyoMagic!, thanks for the clarification. That lady to the left of Alice looks like a young girl to me, and yet it sure looks like she is wearing heels. I can’t tell if she has a miniskirt or shorts/hot pants. I honestly wonder how security would deal with that guy in the tree today; two friends of mine went to the park as chaperones for Grad Nite a year or so ago, and they said that some of the staff was so rude to them that it seriously affected their enjoyment of the evening.

Alonzo, I hope she also uses Breck shampoo, but doesn’t smoke Virginia Slims. I also wondered about the empty Peoplemover cars, it made me think that perhaps the ride was down that day. Or people just weren’t riding it, which seems like heresy.

Chuck, have you seen the photos of the park right now, with the castle hidden behind scaffolding and a large printed scrim? I appreciate that they need to do upkeep, but I sure wouldn’t want to be there on those days.

Stuart Powley, I remember being aware that I could look up and see the surface of the water, but I didn’t care… all of the underwater scenes were wonderful. And the bubble effect used when “diving” was a stroke of genius.

Jonathan, remember, this is 1971, when avocado green was one of the most beloved colors! My mom’s kitchen cabinets (and her washer and drier) were avocado green. Ha ha, it’s true, the band looks like Pat Boone clones. I assume it was a school band filling in for the Disneyland Band, which was on tour with Led Zeppelin. I wish I had a Huggiebear hat.

K. Martinez, ha ha, I remember that jingle! I also remember bringing Hubba Bubba (and Bubblicious) gum to school, and being so “popular” that all of my gum had been given away by lunchtime. I still wake up at night screaming.

David Zacher, gosh, now I’m trying to remember… are all my other photos of the subs going INTO the caverns beneath the falls? I’m much too lazy to check. At this point there is an extra charge for just about everything, so that guy started a bad trend!

K. Martinez, YES. You will get a snack in a cardboard box (actual value, $2.50), and a drink with a blinking LED light in it. You’ll need to reserve your seat 180 days in advance.

Not only is that guy in the tree, but there are two other knuckleheads standing in the planter and leaning on the stone wall. Bad show, somebody smack them and send them to the Seven Dwarves to mine for popcorn.

I agree, this photo is taken on the "Matterhorn Avenue" part of the parade route. SBC is to the right, and if you turn right just past the lady with the bouffant wig, you will walk into Snow White's Grotto.

The blue umbrellas must be the Plaza Inn. I don't recall blue umbrellas there, but will not deny the possibility.

Those band uniforms are awful.

I dislike parades, especially the Disney ones, so I will go off and get in line for the subs, which are probably shorter since everyone else is watching the parade.

Major, here's another avocado kitchen and laundry kid, with plenty of dark brown, orange, and plastic woodgrain thrown in to boot. We must face facts, all forms of common sense, style,s cale, proportion, and good taste evaporated in the '70's. I strongly object to people trying to revive 70's styles and colors. Everything was bad then, I lived it and do not need to be reminded of it. But it is fun to look at pictures to laugh and point.

Thanks for these pictures, especially the sub photo which is practically perfection, the sub should be the "Mary Poppins", not the Skate.

Dog gone-it! I'm late to the party! Happy Valentine's Day everyone!

I believe what you are looking at is the All American College Band making a march through the Park. They would perform at different locations in the Park. I cannot tell from this shot the man walking on the outside left of the band may be Dr. Arthur "Art" C. Bartner but after reviewing his page http://uscband.usc.edu/office-staff/arthur-c-bartner/ he didn't start leading the band until 1974.

Finally, I like that "Zacchaeus" (a wee little man was he) climbed a tree on the left to get a better view. Although Luke 19:4 records it as a different tree... that is clearly an olive tree.

Always your pal,
Amazon Belle

PS Agree with all those before me... the castle is to the right of the Tuba players (tube players' left)... and through the trees in the hub... we can see the top of the Tiki Room.

I love the photo of the submarine and Peoplemover--shots that you say are "familiar," and which we all felt were ubiquitous... and now that they're history and can't be duplicated today they become extra special!

Hello all. Been away for a while. Make that ditto on the College Band and the location. KS

Growing up we had an avocado color refrigerator, washer, dryer, vacuum cleaner and shag carpet! Oh yeah, and avocado ceramic knobs on all of the kitchen cupboards and drawers.

JG, the men that appear to be standing in the planter and leaning on the wall, are actually sitting on the wall. There is sort of a bridge there at that point in the roadway. The water from the old House of the Future site, flows under the road and comes out over at Snow White's Grotto. From there it flows under the Castle drawbridge and down around the west side of the Plaza and beyond. Today, security would not even allow those guys to sit on that wall. If they were to fall backwards, they would end up in the shallow water below.

@Tokyo, you are right! Now that I look more closely, that guy's pant leg is the same color as the coping on top of the bridge, which fooled me. I thought he was leaning on the coping, not his knees.

I do remember the bridge and the stream, it flows over to the right and connects up to the pond where Dopey used to fish, before they took away his rod.

We were in more or less the same location for the fireworks show a couple of years ago, but not sitting on the bridge coping.

Shag carpet. Oh dear, we had that too. I do not miss the 70's.
