The Mark Twain, June 1958

Well, you guys know the drill by now - Sunday is not "fun day" here on GDB. Instead it is the equivalent of your weekly dose of castor oil.

I'm curious, have any of you ever seen a photo of the Mark Twain? If the answer is "yes", please leave a 1000-word comment below.

Anyway, there it is, looking very blue. The world was just bluer then, OK? I'd explain why, but it's very technical and stuff.

The Twain is splooshing past the bandstand that used to jut out into the River, with most of the cool people standing on the top deck. It's a little bit strange to see that area just in front of the sternwheeler, just trees and nothing much else.

Here's another photo taken mere seconds later. In addition to the steamboat, you can see a landing for one of the rafts to Tom Sawyer Island, and (to our right) the fishing dock.

And I was so certain by June, 1958, Disneyland ended the practice of allowing the Mark Twain to 'sploosh'-! Who says Sunday's are blah-??!!

Thanks, Major.

Fishing dock? I wonder if they ever did a dead-fish hunt day at Disneyland. You know! Looking for hidden dead fish around the park instead of Easter eggs.

Nice Mark Twain images today. Thanks, Major.

Photos so detailed, I can practically smell the fishing doc from here.

Nanook, all of the finest stern-wheelers went “sploosh”! Just read Mark Twain’s “Life on the Mississippi” and see for yourself.

K. Martinez, dead fish are one of the “hard facts” that Walt referred to in his famous speech. So are mosquitos. And soggy cereal.

Dean Finder, sorry about that! ;-)

Since I don't feel like typing 1000 words right at this moment, I will say no, I don't believe I have seen a pic of the Mark Twain. Major, are you sure this isn't a pic of the "Cordelia K." This does look an awful lot like the Knott's Lagoon. However, I am wondering how those people got over to that island.

Matthew beat me to it. That's what I get for enjoying Sunday before my morning cup of gorilla.

The "cool people" do not stand on the top desk with all the regular tourists - they go to the lower desk and enjoy looking at the steam engine and try to figure out exactly where the jazz music scene was filmed for "Disneyland After Dark". (Actually the REALLY cool people are up in the wheelhouse!)

The really, really cool people know how to type the work "deck".
