Swiss Family Treehouse, January 1963

I'll start today's post with this neat photo taken from the upper branches of the Swiss Family Treehouse! This was certainly a man-eating tree, which might explain the strange (and cool) red leaves.

Anyway, what a beautiful view. In the distance we can see that the Christmas star is atop the Matterhorn; wasn't there some rumor that a new improved star was to make its appearance a year or so ago? So much for rumors.

Down below is the entrance to the Jungle Cruise with its distinctive sign, probably made from the skin of an endangered animal.

Next is a photo - not a very good photo - looking toward one of the huts; you can't really see it, but the pipe organ (source of the "Swisskapolka") is in this hut. I love the way bits and pieces of the shipwreck are incorporated into the structure. Some say that when you hold the tree to your ear, you'll hear the ocean!

Major-

Some beautiful images today - with the Matterhorn and Christmas star too boot, no less-! Also enjoy how we can capture a glance at the midway, below.

And I was always told if you hold the tree to your ear, you'll hear "It's a Small World (After All)" played on the organ...

Thanks, Major.

No, no, you're both wrong. If you hold the tree to your ear you'll........get termites. (tiny little animatronic ones)

GREAT pictures these last couple of days, Major!

We can even see a couple Skyway gondolas over Tomorrowland in that first pic. And that tree in the middle of Adventureland....the one in the circular planter......isn't that the tree that they haven't cut down yet?

Wonderful theme today. The Swiss Family Robinson gets a view of the Swiss Matterhorn Mountain. All that's missing is the Swiss cheese.

And here I thought when you held a tree to your ear you could hear it's bark. Oh that was a bad one and it goes downhill from there.

These are really fun images today. Love seeing the view of the Jungle Cruise sign and Adventureland walkway from above. Thanks, Major.

Thanks for these pics. Pretty uncrowded...must have been early in the morning. That first shot is a wonderment. I was about 13 yrs. old at that time and climbed that tree a few times that year. Lovely.

Ken - I can see this thread branching off into a litany of tree puns, but I can't think of any good ones myself. I'll stick around and see what develops, but until I can come up with a good one I'll leaf it alone.

TM! - Please don't give them any ideas!!!

A litany of tree puns? Don't you mean acorn acopia?

I'll never forget the first time I climbed up into the tree house it was like shrinking down and walking into a real dollhouse.

I wonder what sap evicted the Swiss Family Robinson out of their tree house back in 1999.

I always get here late and all the good puns are usually taken! I won't get all pithy though. I'll just go root around my trunk of puns until I find one.

I for one have missed the SFR Treehouse. I hear there is one in Florida, though. Thanks for the photos!

And welcome back, Melissa. We were just talking about you.

Wow @David Zacher I see what you mean about getting to the party late.

The good puns left aren't exactly low hanging fruit. I guess I'll just have to lumber on down (h)arbor blvd. And as Biff would say "make like a tree and get outta here".

The Florida tree is looking good these days. There wad a refurb not long ago, mostly to fix the water wheel. I haven't been to see it lately, but the pictures look great.

I'm logging back in kind of late today. I was trying to come up with something concrete, but I'm afraid I'm knot able to.

Nanook, I guess that the next time I go to Disneyland I am going to have to hold the tree to my ear and see what happens!

Scott Lane, D’oh!

TokyoMagic!, I have no idea about the planter… that’s the kind of detail that I am terrible at knowing!

K. Martinez, I see that you have let the genie out of the bottle (the “bad pun” genie). God help us all.

DrGoat, it is possible that, being the holidays, this was taken on a weekday, back when the park really did have regular “off days”.

Chuck… head… aching… vision blurring… can’t…take…the puns…

Melissa, at least you didn’t continue to shrink!

K. Martinez, ouch.

David Zacher, I’m not so sure about “good puns”, but a lot of them have been taken!

Alonzo P Hawk, you need to set your alarm to 12:01 AM (assuming you aren’t still awake) and check my blog every day. Then you can be the first.

Melissa, I’m glad to hear that the Florida tree is being maintained! Wish I could see it for myself.

JG, the photos, or the terrible puns?!?!

TokyoMagic!, Wally Boag would be proud.

These photos are beautiful. I like seeing the bamboo style trashcans. I believe that planter around the tree has grown taller. It used to be small like that in 1986. It was the far end of the stroller parking (when we had to extend the Jungle Cruise queue). Stroller parking would move to the center of Adventureland between the two trees (near tree is out of photographers lens to the left).

Finally, what I miss and truly appreciate about Disneyland, before the mess, there was a large amount of benches. Look down to the far end of Adventureland and there, outside of the Tiki Room exit and beside the Tahitian Terrace you can see a place to sit and relax.

Always your pal,
