A Pair from September 1963

In the balmy evenings of late summer, the sun still shines brightly at nearly 6:00 PM (as the clock atop Main Street Station tells us). The fireworks won't be for another three hours!  But that's OK, it gives us plenty of time to ride more attractions. I'm in the mood to take the Grand Circle Tour aboard the Disneyland & Santa Fe Railroad!

Doesn't the Flower Mart look pretty? Bundles and buckets and baskets and bouquets of colorful fake flowers make for an inviting scene, although the only person we see is a cast member down at the end. I guess it wasn't that inviting.

  1. The Flower Mart pic is postcard perfect! Love the colors. Thanks, Major.

  2. I think Christopher Miller's (Walt's grandson) name is on the upper portion of the window in the background. The lower section has the word "Gym", but I can't make out the words that are above that. I believe his name appears on the same window today, but above lettering that reads, "Turkish Baths".

  3. @ TM!-

I believe Christopher Miller's name can be found on the opposite side of the street, above the Carnation Ice Cream Parlor. Someone out there must know the name on the window we can almost see here.

    @ Ken-

Yes, the image is postcard perfect. You would think simply on colors alone, folks would be 'sucked in'; but evidently not at the moment.

    Thanks, Major.

Amazing to think that this is a photo from an amusement park. Disney detail has always made the difference!

  5. I think they might have bagged more customers if they had changed it to the "Main Street Flour Mart," although there wouldn't be any pictures of it that turned out looking this spectacular - they'd all be too grainy.

  7. Ken Martinez, it IS kind of postcardy!

TokyoMagic!, it says “Main Street Gym”, appropriately enough. Take a look at it here!. I wonder why it was changed to “Turkish Baths”?

Nanook, do you mean that you think that Christopher Miller’s window is now in a different location? Stranger things have happened!

Anonymous, it sure doesn’t look like any other amusement park I can think of.

Chuck, they could have sold small bags of flour, which everyone could eat as they walked around Disneyland. Kids would be a mess!

    DrGoat, you’re welcome!

  8. Every bit of composition in the Flower Mart photo points to that lovely glistening blond head of hair. Maybe it’s just me. She looks so fetching in that white blouse and light grey skirt.

  9. Major, thanks for the info and the closer look!

Nanook, the last time I checked, his name was still over the restrooms!

  10. Major-

Thanks for the correction. This is the one and only location.

  11. Monkey Cage Kurt, I know just what you mean... it's hard to not look right at that blonde lady. I had a friend who worked on Main Street years ago, and I went to the park when she was on the job; she looked so great in her old-fashioned costume!

TokyoMagic!, I'm glad his name is still there.

Nanook, it wasn't really a correction... I thought that perhaps his window really had been relocated.

  12. That's a great shot of the Flower Mart. And isn't that little white two-wheeled cart in a View Master photo or two?

I do think this space was used better as an annex for the Ice Cream Parlor. In the 70's-90's, if one timed it properly (in line by 8:30) you could watch the Main Street Electrical Parade go by while enjoying a Matterhorn Sunday with the wife and kids. Those were really fine times...
