Random Saturday

Happy 4th o' July, everyone! Please don't blow your fingers off. I'm being lazy today, so that means it's time for more leftovers.

This 1956 shot shows Casey Jr., apparently having some mechanical trouble. He appears to be stopped away from the loading depot, and there are a couple of concerned looking men standing around hoping that they don't get blamed.

Here's a slightly different look at the Submarine Lagoon; we're peering down into the shallow water, I'm not sure where the photo was taken from. The lagoon is full of abalone, giant clams, coral, anemones, and various seaweeds. Not a clownfish in sight.

Uh oh, it's one of those gangs that I've heard so much about. Just give them your money and don't crack wise, or you'll wake up dead.

We can see the Fantasyland Autopia behind that gang of kids, but what's that white cage-looking thing behind the little boy's head?

Hmmm, good eyes; I honestly don't know what that thing is. Could it be an area for a band to perform? If so I'm not sure I've ever seen it before.

Those angry thugs took every nickel we had last visit. Word of warning - stear clear of 'em. They may look innocent...

It looks like a little stage back there, doesn't it TokyoMagic?

Re the Casey Jr. train: The photo is taken from the very north end of the park looking south. Was it photographed from the passing berm-train? Also, there are no passengers in Casey. I know nothing about this ride... is this a spare train parked on a side spur??

Major and OTB, I think you're right...it's probably a mini bandstand/stage of sorts. Maybe it was for an Alpine band since it appears to be in front of the Matterhorn. Or maybe it's the cage that that little "gang" escaped from.

Katella, I was thinking the same thing about Casey Jr. The DL train used to pass right behind it before Small World was built. And you can tell that we're behind it because of the location of the Skyway. There is a side spur that exists behind Casey Jr. today for the storage of the trains, but I don't know if one existed back in 1956.

i love the picture of the gang...reminds me much of photos my mom took of us from the day, all in matching shoes (we had those cool red mary-janes!) :)
