Main Street, September 1964

Howsabout some photos of Main Street USA? It don't cost nothin'! Nothing but YOUR IMMORTAL SOUL.

Town Square has many charms, but one of the best is that you can look back toward Main Street Station and will often see one of the wonderful Disneyland RR locomotives. In this case, the Fred Gurley; old number 3, as I calls it. It debuted on March 28, 1958, less than six years before this picture was snapped.

Some of the slides from this batch have taken on a slight purple tone, which I tried to ameliorate, with limited success. Main Street still looks pretty gloomy, not to mention practically deserted - we can only see a few people; I think Santa's arm is visible to the extreme left. What, he can't enjoy a day at the Happiest Place on Urf? Today is a great day for trashcan counters, and I'll sit back and let you have fun.

  1. Major-
I'm assuming that out-of-focus vertical blob on the left side of the walkway on the Hub is the Popcorn 2 location wagon, still covered-up from the night before-?

    Thanks, Major.

  2. Subdued, but still has the promise of an exciting day at Disneyland. There's George&Martha Washington (joined together in a tragic transporter malfunction) next to the Cannon. One bare leg, one pants-clad leg.

The gloomy pic was taken at the beginning of the Zombie Apocalypse, when everything still looked relatively normal. The few 'people' you see here are, of course, zombies. Some say the zombie problem started in the churro mines under the Castle.
Gloomy, creepy, and kinda sad looking. The clock says it's just before 10:00, so maybe the Park isn't officially open yet? If that isn't Santa's suit on the left, then what is it? I count ten trashcans, but there might be more near the Castle, hard to tell.

Maybe these photos looked gloomy and joyless even before they 'turned'? Thanks, Major.

  3. Nanook, I think that you’re right, though it looks kind of blue in this photo (I guess it has a blue/gray cover? Also, is that a person framed in the Castle arch?

JB, wow, George and Martha look for for 200+ years old. Clearly they are daywalkers. The gloomy pic is so odd…, there’s all the little flags, so it must have been near the 4th of July (it’s date stamped September of that year). Which would really make Santa strolling down the street a strange sight! Could it be that an ordinary guest was dressed in that red and white garb? I’m sure the park opened at 10:00, that was not unusual, but man, that pic gives me the willies.

Seeing the street lead straight into the castle gives main st a different feel. I'm now wondering if it would be better to move the statue in the middle of the hub to another spot in the park...

    Major, nice views today.

I count 10 trash cans in photo 1, possibly a new record.

And one of the old school white fluted pillar drinking fountains in photo 1.

My day is complete. Thank you!

  6. Always loved the POV from Town Square seeing the locomotives on top of the entrance tunnel. It outlines th shape and structure of the locos. Thanks, Major.

  8. On that March 28, 1958 day when the Gurley was dedicated, work hadn't even been completed on the locomotive, and the roof hatch cover--seen today at a jaunty angle on the cab roof--hadn't yet been installed. Luckily, it wasn't raining!

  9. There is a TG over there is the Tour Guide Gardens- then a simple umbrella and chairs…she’s explaining something and the crowds are gathering. In 1964 the people going on Guided Tours were MUCH more than in the 80’s. I remember I found some log book of numbers back then…I’m sure long gone…Is URF that dog- space creature-muppet that had his own sitcom? What were we thinking? The empty Main Street is perfect with its trash can soldiers and trees without scale. A Main Street that is etched in my memory. Thanks Major!

  10. Anonymous, while I would agree with you, I also know that many people love the shot of the Partners statue with the Castle behind it.

JG, you should rate your day like this: “It is a 10 trashcan day!”. Or if it wasn’t so great, “This was a 2 trashcan day”. It’s like Walt using hotdog-eating lenghts.

    K. Martinez, I love those views too and am always happy to find a slide like that!

ExclusiveContentZone, thinking is where I get in trouble.

Steve DeGaetano, I think this is before they installed the Slurpee machines inside the locomotives, too!

Bu, good eye on the Tour Guide. I wonder what she would have been saying at that early portion of the tour? Probably giving them a warning: “If any one of you sasses me, I’ll murdalize ya!”. I don’t even know, do they still offer guided tours? It would be kind of fun to do, just for the unique experience. But I don’t want to be murdalized.
