Fantasyland and Frontierland

Here are two scans from a lot that only consisted of this pair. But they're worth a look.

First up is this fun one with two ladies excited to see Pinocchio. He looks as if he was caught by surprise. For some reason I'm imagining that both women are from Italy, they have a fun 60s European vibe - I'll bet they were extras in "Love Italian Style". Henry Mancini go-go music could be heard whenever they were nearby. Or… they lived in Fullerton. The woman in pink (with the crop top) probably got a lot of looks!

Two photos could hardly be more different, but that's how it goes. This one is from the Mine Train Through Nature's Wonderland, we're passing through the mysterious Saguaro Forest. A recent (and rare) rain has caused the saguaros to bloom. Saguaros can live up to 150 years, or even more! Sometimes they take on strange shapes, and sometimes they talk to me.

  1. That's a cute picture of Pinocchio and the gals. Wasn't there a story about that bench we can see behind the pink gal?? I recall something was mentioned in the past, on this blog...anyone recall?

I love that simple tree-line on the berm.

    Thanks, Major.

Hi, Anon.! It’s actually after 2:00 a.m. by me.

  5. I can tell Pinocchio is embarrassed because his cheeks are flushed. I think he's deliberately averting his eyes from Miss Croptop lest his eyes meander where they shouldn't go. The little crew cut kid on the left is impatiently waiting for the ladies to finish conversing with Pinoke so he can have his turn. I get the impression that the CM inside the costume is a guy, not sure why. Seems like it's usually a gal? I'd love to explore inside the Tinker Bell Toy Shop.

This is a nice crisp picture of the cacti. I think I spot the one that looks like a skeleton hand. Sue mentioned the trees on top of the berm; they're planted equidistant like a row of corn in a vegetable garden. In a couple more years they won't look anything like that!

Sue, yes, we did discuss that colorful bench. But I can't recall the story either.

    Nice pics, Major. Thanks.

The Major never sleeps. Time means nothing to him.

Ha, JB….i hope this doesn’t turn into another “Where’s that backstage Christmas star picture”!!

  9. I've never noticed that little blue pirate painted above the arch of the Tinker Bell Toy Shop. It doesn't really look like Captain Hook, since he is dressed all in blue, is wearing a different hat, and appears to have a peg leg. I'm also trying to figure out what that little painted banner says. "Something"- Pirate? "Public Pirate"?

    Thanks, Major!

  10. TOKYOMAGIC: that pirate reads “PEG LEG THE PIRATE”. The Tinkerbell Toyshop clock tower features 8 painted vignettes from the story of Peter Pan. These include HANGMAN’s TREE, THE CROCODILE, INDIAN CHEIF , CAPTN. HOOK’S SHIP, PEG LEG THE PIRATE, MERMAID LAGOON, TINKER BELL, and NEVER NEVER LAND

  11. Old Pinoke has to get used to being a celebrity, beautiful women will follow him everywhere. This is almost a paparazzi pic, where is his bodyguard?

I love the cactus pic, this is why we miss the Mine Train. The “Dynamite Goat” on BTRR is funny, but not this funny.

Great start to Friday Major! Thank you!

  12. Is Nanook gonna tell us what kind of camera bare-midriff lady is holding?

  13. Lou and Sue, I don’t remember a cute story about the bench, though benches like that (nice multicolors) were found throughout Fantasyland. I’ve seen some like it on eBay, though who knows if they are really from Disneyland.

Anonymous, I was probably asleep at midnight (because I get up very early), luckily Blogger will publish whenever I set it to!

Anonymous, go for it, Pinoke! She looks like fun!

Lou and Sue, Anon must live on the west coast.

JB, there’s just something about Pinocchio’s body language, sort of a “Huh?” vibe. It’s always best to avert one’s eyes. Crew Cut Kid is definitely wishing those girls would go away! I do think this particular Pinoke is a guy, but I also would not be surprised if he is often played by a woman. The “skeleton hand” is a particular kind of desert plant, but I can’t recall the name of it. “Fred”? Ha ha ha! I’m hilarious! Good eye on those trees, they look very “just planted” in the photo.

Lou and Sue, time is a flat circle, whatever that means.

Lou and Sue, I still think that seeing the Christmas Star backstage was one of the cooler discoveries!

JB, and Lou and Sue, I don’t know how to respond to those!

TokyoMagic!, huh, I didn’t notice the little blue pirate either. He has Captain Hook hair, but he also has a pegleg. It does sort of look like “Public Pirate”, but that makes no sense!

Mike Cozart, thank you for the information about the little painted vignettes, I honestly don’t ever remember noticing them or reading about them before. Fun details!

JG, hmmm, I wonder, did the characters have handlers back then? Or were they left on their own, to deal with unpredictable guests? I remember watching Tigger when I was a kid, he was mobbed, and then broke away and started skipping (quickly) to a door backstage. I like the Dynamite Goat (or is it Dy-no-MITE?), but I want the Mine Train back!

Steve DeGaetano, I guess Nanook is off looking at some other blog.

  14. As COLUMBO would deduce: the two girls flirting with Pinocchio are AMERICAN . European women of this time would not be carrying a large purse as was popular with American woman at this time .

The girl in pink is Carla Della Garza from Massapequa, New York . The other girl is Joyce Ryan …. From Rigo Park New Jersey …. ( Carla’s cousin) Joyce is called “Giget” by her friends because of her resemblance to the Sally Field TV character .

The bench Story I think Sue is thinking about is probably the one when Jim J. Bullock was working in fantasyland and was trying to get two TV producers attention and remember him so he threw one of the cast iron benches into the castle moat!! He was fired from Disneyland , but got the part on TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT!!

  15. @ Steve DeGaetano-
Nanook is flummoxed on that camera. (Doubtful it's a Kodak).

And besides, as The Major correctly averred, I was off 'looking at some other blog....' specifically, Thimbles Thru the Ages. Its latest post - Thimbles: The Challenge for Folks with More than Six Digits. Truly thrilling-!

    ^LOL

Are we seeing the bobcat atop that one cactus—a couple from the left?? It looks like a possible side view of it—with the top of its head toward us. (I just don’t recall where he was positioned in that attraction.)

    ReplyDelete
  17. SUE: yes! You can see “old Mr. Bobcat” atop the saguaro cactus!! Good catch!

You know actor Jim J. Bullock tells the story while working at Disneyland he was trying to get the attention of some visiting tv producers …. So he climbed up on one of those saguaro cacti !!! He was fired from Disneyland but got the part on TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT!!!

  18. That was supposed to be five digits. I musta lost my head...

  19. Ha! Mike's Jim J. Bullock anecdotes are like Major's Oxnard jokes. THEY NEVER END! :-p

  20. Mike Cozart, hmmm, I admit that your purse clue rings true. BUT it could be that they were visitors, and “When in America, do as the Americans do”! The head scarf on that one woman looks very European to me, but I guess it wouldn’t be exclusive to those folks. More Jim J. Bullock lore, I’ll bet he had no idea that his legend lives on (and expands)!

Nanook, I’m shocked and amazed that you didn’t recognize that camera. Who are you and what have you done with the real Nanook?? I love collectible thimbles almost as much as I love collectible plates. Anything from the Franklin Mint should go right into the Smithsonian.

Lou and Sue, hey, I didn’t notice the bobcat. Good one! I think there were at least two in the ride, or maybe even three. Love it.

Mike Cozart, someday I hope that Steven Spielberg will make a big-budget feature about Jim J. Bullock, starring Tom Cruise.

Nanook, I noticed nothing amiss, since I have six digits on each appendage.

JB, I never joke about Oxnard!
