Haunted Mansion Snoozles??

When going through a batch of slides, there are the inevitable few photos that will be crummy, for one reason or another. We know them as "Snoozles". And, as you know, I'll share a lot of those on Sundays, just in case they provide some tiny amount of entertainment value. BUT, when scanning a batch from December, 1976, I found two photos from inside the Haunted Mansion that were barely-acceptable. I almost threw my computer into the Grand Canyon. But then I decided that they weren't such bad little slides after all!

Yep, that's a chandelier alright. I wonder if this prop had been used in Hollywood movies? Those big prop houses have everything.  Of course this is from the big ballroom scene, one of the most spectacular sights in almost any ride at the time (and maybe even still). There are some ghosties having fun up among the crystals, but you can barely see them here.

Here's a contemporary photo of the scene, scrounged from the Internet. Look at those crazy ghosts! There's one of Cleopatra's handmaidens, and she's flirting with a fellow who might be a serf from medieval days? Please correct me, I know I'm wrong. A Dickensian fellow has had five too many, but it's not like he's going to get hurt.

Next is this mysterious and abstract image, with blurry blobs of color. TERRIFYING blobs of color! It wasn't very difficult to place this scene, but it was still fun to do the research.

Here we go! This is another photo picked from the Internet, I'm sorry I did not keep track of where it is from. But you can see that we're in the graveyard scene, where spirits from many eras seem to be enjoying a spot o' tea, while others ride bicycles in endless circles.

I hope you've enjoyed these Haunted Mansion Snoozles™!

Major-
I don't think these images truly qualify to be "Snoozles", but rather Fun Fotos-!

Thanks, Major.

*Whiny Tom Hanks voice*: "There's no Snoozles on Thursdays!"

"but you can barely see them here." Well, duh... they're ghosts! OK, now that I got that out of my system, I can say that I share your pain. We know the ghosts are up there... somewhere... but geez. Haunted Mansion interior photos are like finding the Lost Ark... or the Holy Grail... or some other artifact in Harrison Ford movies. And then to realize that the grim grinning ghosts refuse to materialize... Life (and death) isn't fair! I tried adding a lot more Clarity and Brightness to the image but it didn't help very much.

Thanks for including the more visible image, even if it was scrounged. Interesting that it was taken from the exact same angle.

Hmm, I would never guess what that graveyard photo was showing without your internet image. Even with the 'net photo, I still can't really see the similarity. Although, in its own way, it's still a spooky, ethereal image... whatever it is.

"they weren't such bad little slides after all!" [JB hangs a Christmas ornament on the chandelier], "Maybe they just need a little love." Thanks for the Thursday(!) Snoozles, Major.

Ah, The Mansion! It warms my heart at this festive time of the year!
I agree ghostie pictures should be hard to make out. "But he was RIGHT THERE when I snapped the picture!" So in that way, they're perfect!
Now we all get to wait for tomorrow's spooky holiday! Fun fact! Midnight October 31 is actually tonight. Tomorrow night midnight will be November 1st. Just something that popped in my head. Like the voices...

Probably the most difficult of all attractions to photograph, especially with the old analog equipment. I think getting any kind of marginally recognizable result back then deserves applause.

Ive heard the Victorian gent on the chandelier called “Mr. Pickwick”, and Cleopatra is recognizable, but the serf must be one of The Beach Boys (snicker, chortle).

Remember when the Bride was a mystery instead of a 10K word backstory? Sigh.

Marc Davis went all out on the sight gags in the Graveyard too. Impossible to leave with a grave countenance.

Thanks for these topical pics, Major!

Nanook, I think these Snoozles benefit from the “Haunted Mansion BUMP”!

JB, There are Snoozles whenever Major Pepperidge SAYS there are! You can tell when somebody has gone off the rails when they refer to themselves in the third person. I totally understand why we don’t get many vintage photos from the Haunted Mansion, but I sure do wish I had a few more, especially nice clear ones. But it is not to be. Something about the second photo reminded me (for some reason) that in the old seance scene, there used to be a light blob that would wander around on one of the upper walls, leaving behind a glowing trail. I noticed that it wasn’t there the last time I finally got to ride the non-Christmas Mansion for the first time in 8 years. It made me sad that it was apparently removed. I’m glad you got the Charlie Brown reference!

MS, yes, with today’s digital cameras, it is possible to capture fairly incredible ride-throughs of dark rides, which is a great way to scratch that itch when you can’t go to the park.

Stu29573, usually my real-word “ghost pictures” show only a patch of light where there shouldn’t be any. And science has proven that those blobs of light can only be GHOSTS! Good point about midnight tonight. I don’t want it to be November, that means that I have to really start Christmas shopping.

JG, “Mr. Pickwick” makes sense, he looks like a Dickens character. And I like that ghosts from wildly different eras “live” together in peace and harmony. Beach Boys - “serf”… I get it! Over-explaining mysteries is not unique to Disneyland, but when will people realize that the mystery is what’s fun about haunted stuff? Let people make up their own stories.

Technically, those are Boooozles, which neatly catches both aspects. Too much spirits.

If anyone's a D23 member, make sure you watch Don Hahn's HM special tonight. I saw it last week, online, and loved it - and am going to watch it, again, tonight. HERE'S THE COMMERCIAL for it. Whether or not you're a fan of the Nightmare Before Christmas overlay, I think you'll still enjoy seeing inside the HM while it's being constructed.

Major, thanks for the fun post today.

I'm going to guess the chandelier was either custom made or remodeled. For the Pepper's Ghost illusion they'd need a mirror-image duplicate in black -- of the top part anyway -- just as they need duplicate of the dining table.
