Night Views, August 1970
Today's Snoozles (and they are Snoozles) are rare night shots. But... night shots are tough and very often flawed. Which is why they are shared on today's Snoozle Sunday.
It's August, 1970, and it's safe to assume that it was a warm night ("Jason's Disneyland Almanac" shows us that night temperatures were typically in the mid-60s at their lowest during that month). I wonder if folks were lining up to watch the Summer fireworks? While this is how Main Street typically looks today, it's unusually crowded for 1970.
Speaking of fireworks! Several large chrysanthemum shells burst at once above the Emporium, this looks like the grand finale to me. I tend to keep a cool and calm exterior (as some of you know), but the sight of fireworks at Disneyland is still pretty thrilling! I love the loud "bang" followed by the echo, along with the other hisses and crackles of the display.

OK, I will admit that these are genuine, dyed-in-the-wool, Snoozles. The first one looks like things with my glasses off... blurry and indistinct. Is that the Castle back there? Or maybe Godzilla is rampaging through Disneyland? The scene does have a nice warm glow that also matches peoples mood as well.
The fireworks shot is a little better. If the bursts were more colorful it would be a LOT better. But, alas. Looking at all those popcorn lights, I wonder if they have switched to LED bulbs in recent years, to save money. And they wouldn't have to replace them as often... theoretically. If they have switched to LEDs, do they look the same as incandescents?

Speaking of fireworks, there were a lot of fireworks going off in my area, tonight. I think some sports team won some kind of game, somewhere in Los Angeles. When did people start setting off fireworks whenever "their" team wins a game? I don't remember people doing that until maybe about 10 years ago.
Oh, before everyone chimes in. I was being sarcastic. I do know that the Lakers won the Superbowl at Hollywood Park, last night! ;-)
Welcome to nighttime photography with film, circa 1970! It wasn’t any easier in the ‘80s, ‘90s, and 2000s. Kids today just don’t appreciate what they’ve got.
TM!, you sure know your soccer! If the Lakers can keep their focus all the way through the LPGA Championship, I think they are serious contenders for this year’s Stanley Cup.
Major, I say confidently that there is no picture of Disneyland that I can’t squeeze out some measure of satisfaction. I was probably in the Park in August of 1970 and even these blurry photos bring back good memories. Thank you.
Chuck, I once had a cup named Stanley too. Sportsball is so tedious.

These photos are those instances when one tries to capture an amazing moment, well knowing that the 100 speed film in the camera will never do it justice. The first photo has practically no discernible faces, just dark, anonymous forms, which makes it a bit unsettling. 1970 is the summer when my aunt's family and mine got together for a joint family outing to Disneyland - ten of us altogether and no one got lost or separated!
JB, these might be Snoozles, but they are the BEST. It’s like having the creamiest, most delicious vanilla ice cream. Yes, it’s vanilla, but you’re gonna enjoy it more than you think. I have so many blurry, bad slides in which somebody attempted to capture the fireworks on their 50 or 60 year old camera, I want to go back in time and tell the photographer to save their film for something better. And then I want to buy stock in a few select companies.
JB, congratulations! I wish I knew why it worked today, but didn’t yesterday.
TokyoMagic!, I am not aware of any sports ever being played in Los Angeles, not counting Little League. I don’t set off fireworks when my favorite team wins, instead I join the mob and overturn cars and set fire to small businesses.

Chuck, I still take terrible nighttime photos. I’m not bragging, it’s just my specialty. Don’t be jealous. “The Lakers”… when I think of Los Angeles, I think of lakes.
JG, I’m actually semi-happy with the first photo because it’s so unusual. Sure it has issues, but who doesn’t? And for a fireworks shot, the second one is better than many, so that’s worth considering. Sportsball - I listen to a podcast that is not really about sports, but the hosts often go on tangents about “their” teams. They care SO MUCH. And I care so little!
Omnispace, I don’t mind the slight motion blur on the crowd, it adds a bit of implied energy to the scene. Or am I just rationalizing? I’m glad nobody got lost in your big 1970 group! You’d think that at least one kid would wander off when nobody was looking.
Ah...those 'lazy, crazy, hazy days (and nights) of Summer'. What's not to like with that first shot? I likely was working at Hills that evening with the 5pm to 1:30am closing shift. Having a summer romance with another CM at the location made it ever more special. It's also a reminder that Yippie Day on the 6th was just a one-day event and it was back to business as usual after that. KS
