It's another sleepy Sunday, and that means I have some sleepy slides for you. Which is appropriate, because they both feature Sleeping Beauty Castle, circa 1966.
This first slide had some damage, so I cropped it down, leaving just the filet. It's a perfectly nice (though off-center) look at the Castle; the Plaza's trees have grown large enough to almost block the view. And I'm always happy to see the center flower bed, sans "Partners" statue.
Just a little closer now! Two ladies pose for the legally-mandated photo of them with the Castle nearby. I will mostly refrain from commenting on the colors of the Castle!
In the last picture, where are those two little kids standing(?) - it looks like they're standing on the wall, to the left of the castle walkway.
ReplyDeletePurple and yellow flower combinations always remind me of Disneyland. You see that combination in Tomorrowland, often. I like it!
I like the lady's blouse (on the lower left) - white with bright pink and yellow and orange. Any idea as to what's pictured on her blouse?
Thanks, Major! Fun people watching, today.
Lou and Sue: for decades there used to be 4 circular seating turrets on each side of the stonework leading to the castle drawbridge ( a total of four ) those kids are standing on the “stone” seating of those turrets. While I’m not aware of any guests accidents involving them , sometime around Disneyland’s 50th the raised seating was removed.
ReplyDeleteI am always up for a pic of Sleeping Beauty Castle or the Mark Twain. Pretty sweet any time. Sue, I can't tell what's on her blouse, but I like it as well. Major, I knew something was missing, no Partners statue. Just an unobstructed view of the castle. Sweet. We have a statue of a guy who started a mining empire in our town. He used to be on Main Street, but he is now relegated to the museum. Just sayin. Thanks Major.
ReplyDeleteI remember when they removed those outcove benches on the bridge because I was fascinated by Disneyland photo updates back then. It was done near the 60th anniversary, and that was also when they added railings to the walls and made the drawbridge so it can never raise and lower again. :-( Thanks, Major.
ReplyDeleteIn the second photo, to the left of the foreground ladies, walking with the boy in a green shirt, I think you can see the back side of babushka. At least, I think that’s what it is, unless maybe it’s a black voyageur’s cap she bought on vacation to the north woods.
ReplyDeleteBased on the date of the image file, it was taken and/or processed 55 years ago this month.
Those kids are standing on the stone bridge benches I was sitting on with my girlfriend on Grad Night just a few weeks before this photo in June of 1966...Fine time
ReplyDeleteLou and Sue, the kids are floating because they’re GHOSTS! I was actually going to answer your question, but I see that Mike Cozart beat me to it. I know what you mean bout purple and yellow reminding you of Disneyland - purple and green always make me think of the Haunted Mansion (or rather, many publications about the Mansion). I can’t quite make out what’s on that lady’s shirt; kids flying kites? Just a wild guess!
ReplyDeleteMike Cozart, I still can’t believe that they removed those seats! It’s amazing how many decisions still make me scratch my head.
Jonathan, the only thing I can make out for *fairly* certain is what looks like two stylized people standing side by side. Other than that, all bets are off. I sort of like old statues of city forefathers in real cities, but Walt had made it pretty clear that he didn’t want a tribute to him in Disneyland. Do you remember the name of the guy in your town?
Andrew, they had to remove those benches because they were worried about children getting too comfortable. A comfortable child lets his/her guard down, and that’s when the portcullis will suddenly drop, skewering everyone in its path. Now you know.
Chuck, that is SOME babushka! I’ve never seen one like that before. I guess it could be her hair, but even that looks weird. Why can’t she get a mohawk like a normal person? 55 years! Makes ya think.
Mark, I was always in too much of a hurry to ever sit on those stone benches, but I liked that they were there. I’m sure the powers that be were trying to avoid anything that might cause guests to stop on the bridge. Arg.
The Castle as it should be, and still is, in my memory.
ReplyDeleteThanks Major, a little clear pool of sanity and clarity today.
JG
Very nice!
ReplyDeleteAlthough isn't the castle facing the wrong way? ;-)
Those little seating areas on the bridge were so awesome. I don't think that as a guest I DIDN'T stop there to pause a bit, get some sun, look at swans, hear Snow White and Jiminy Crickett. I think the castle would be as sacred cow as they come, but not when there are insurance companies involved or really super bad taste and paint. It's nice to see the olive trees and the planters, all cohesive and harmonious...and vintage people dressed smartly. What a stark contrast to Pell and Bowery from yesterday. There was a story about the light standards with the white globes..where they came from or were rescued from...don't remember it, but maybe someone can chime in.
ReplyDeleteI can see that they removed the alcoves for the safety issues of the day...and to improve crowd flow by not encouraging guests to stop and enjoy the swans..which no longer are there. 'Forget all that...just keep your eyes on the castle.'
ReplyDeleteIt just occurred to me that at some point management will consider a moving walkway will be an improvement to just shuttle people across and through the castle. It will likely terminate into a merchandise shop (sigh) Cynical Sunday. KS
@ Sue-
ReplyDeletePurple and yellow does remind one of the entrance to Tomorrowland (of yore). Curious that the yellow/purple/green flowers seen in the 1st image are different than what was placed in the "Disneyland World of Flowers" book. There, published one year prior, the Plaza displays a bed of begonias ringed by sweet alyssum and golden feather - and the planter was missing the surrounding, circular concrete 'bench'.
@ KS-
"It will likely terminate into a merchandise shop..." Likely, LIKELY-?? I would imagine at least one shop-!! (Sigh, indeed).
Thanks, Major.
And soon Disney will allow guests to bypass the people in the merchandise register lines by charging a express checkout fee thru GENIE.
ReplyDeleteLooking closely at the two ladies in #2, there's a strong facial resemblance. I'm willing to bet they're mother and daughter.
ReplyDeleteLovely pictures today of those relaxing, enchanting days gone by.
Mike, that's a brilliant marketing strategy!
ReplyDeleteBTW, I'm surprised the washrooms are still free! GENIE could be added there, too.
Mark, it's cool to think these pictures are a nice snapshot memorial of your wonderful evening!
Fun comments, all!
Going to the bathroom will still be free, but you’ll need to be a paid-up VIP (Very Important Paper) Club Member to have access to toilet tissue. Then, for a fee that will vary by season and estimated crowd level, you can use your smartphone to make a reservation to wash your hands up to 60 days in advance (90 days if you’re staying on Disney property). And remember, in the Johnnie+ Program, a drain is a flush your heart makes!
