I just scanned a group of slides from sometime in the 1980s (I believe) - no date stamp or anything else to really indicate when they were taken. And none of them were the kind of thing that got my heart beating faster. But a lot of them were taken as the sun set, giving shots of the Rocket Jets a nice pink sunset feel.
But there were also these two photos! I almost rejected them, since they are mostly black silhouettes, but ultimately decided to share them because they are unlike anything else I've posted. The only things really recognizable are the Rocket Jets and the Skyway. The red sky is interesting, but kind of ominous too.
Other than the masts and flags on the Chicken of the Sea Pirate Ship, there's not much else to glean from this second photo.
The headlight’s on!
ReplyDeleteI’m glad you didn’t reject these, Major! Thank you!
Major-
ReplyDeleteMother Nature at her finest.
Thanks, Major.
It looks like 2 people are kissing on the Skyway.
ReplyDeleteI really like the first one! I could see this framed on a wall as art. It beats a lot of what gets put on walls as art...
ReplyDeleteI love these two very unusual views!
ReplyDeleteWe can also see the tip of Big Thunder, just to the left of the Pirate Ship's masts.
Sue, I don't think the two people in the Skyway bucket are kissing. I think they are playing that game where you tuck an apple between your chin and your neck, and then attempt to pass it to your partner without using your hands!
I’m going to guess these were taken from the PeopleMover. Interesting to note that the Matterhorn isn’t visible in either photograph.
ReplyDeleteI think what we’re seeing on the Skyway is actually a guy looking into a kinetoscope. If you stop to think about it, it really is the only plausible explanation.
Happy Father’s Day! to all the dads...and Happy Sunday to all!
ReplyDeleteNice pictures, and yes, I think sometime in the 80's. I used to see this red sky a lot- I think during Santa Ana's or some other Mother Nature thing and we had a name for it...don't remember...it wasn't just "wow...a lot of smog and dust in the air today." It had a name, and I only saw it in OC, not where I was living at the time at the beach on the LA side of things..those were yellow-ish/pinkish and not "the earth as we know it is ending: red sky." And yes, interesting to note that the Matterhorn or even the tops of spires of the castle aren't in the shot. I'm thinking that this was at the very high point of the PeopleMover track on the other side of the sub lagoon..very peaceful. Skyway buckets were peaceful too. "They ruin everything!" Thanks for posting.
ReplyDeleteLou and Sue, it was a close call, since there’s not a lot to actually see other than that firey-red sky!
ReplyDeleteNanook, I can’t help thinking that the air pollution must have been really something for the sunset to be so spectacular!
Lou and Sue, People kissing?! Yuck! ;-)
Stu29573, my walls have only the finest art on them. Thomas Kinkade, LeRoy Neiman, Margaret Keane - all of the greats!
TokyoMagic!, oh yeah, I didn’t notice Big Thunder at all! I only know of that game with passing the orange from neck to neck from some old movie - can’t remember which one. Something with Cary Grant? “Charade”? I could look it up, but that would require effort. You understand. I am proposing a new version of that game, using a pork chop instead of an orange.
Chuck, there were a number of photos of the Matterhorn in this lot of photos (stay tuned!), but they are generally better pictures than today’s weird examples. I had forgotten about the fact that the Skyway had old-fashioned penny arcade amusements on them!
Lou and Sue, yes, Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there.
Happy Father's Day to Lou and any other Dads who might be reading this!
ReplyDeleteTM!, it would be really hard to pass that apple to the next bucket. So I agree with Sue. Sunsets can trigger that emotion, says I.
These are great, Major. That sunset! And the Rocket Jet coming around the tree thinking 'maybe I'll just keep going straight on 'till morning'.
Zach
Bu, I normally think of a sky like this as occurring when we’ve had brush fires around SoCal. In other words, extreme air pollution! Last night I was noticing how our sunset was very delicate, with subtle blues and pinks and yellows, none of this “hit you over the head” red stuff. Man, I sure wish I could ride the Skyway over Disneyland just as the sun was setting and all the lights were lit below - what a sight that would be!
ReplyDeletezach (Every time I leave a comment, there's a new one I missed!), if one's date won't give a kiss on the Skyway at sunset, its probably time to break up! I'm glad these are getting a good response, I thought, "People are going to wonder WHY I bothered!".
ReplyDeleteMajor-
ReplyDeleteWe're really thinking alike these past few days. Not only was I talking with a friend about Thomas Kinkade (well, who wouldn't-??!! - for as you say "all the greats!"), but I also just looked at Charade. Yep: a couple of oranges, Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, and a few extras (one of them with 'god-given equipment') aiding Cary with the stunt. Laughter ensues.
I also suspect excessive 'pollutants' in the air helped contribute to the deep red in these images. (Either that, or very-faded film).
Sunset pics... I like 'em... :)
ReplyDeleteMuchas gracias Major!
That first pic makes a great background screen
ReplyDeleteDuring lunch today, I read today’s Father’s Day wishes, and the nice comments from the other day from everyone, to my dad, and he said, “Thank you!”
ReplyDeleteMajor, my dad also said that it’s wonderful you post everyone’s pictures. He appreciates it! (And so do we!)
Fine stuff, unusual, and that’s good.
ReplyDeleteAtmospheric shots of Disneyland are rare.
I just added Charade to my streaming queue, an enjoyable film with a nice soundtrack.
Had a great day yesterday, belated thanks to all and especially Major for hosting.
