You may remember this group of friends from some nice Adventureland photos, circa 1964. In this photo they've found a little tree that they admire. Maybe it spoke to them! But for some reason the picture turned out very dark (this is how it looks after I lightened it considerably). I'm trying to figure out where they are standing - obviously it's the seating area for a restaurant. Maybe it's outside the Plaza Pavilion?
Major, WAKE UP, AGAIN! Those silly pictures are missing, again. *sigh*
ReplyDeleteALREADY FIXED! I was expecting it this time! Meanwhile, what the hell, Google, what are you doing to me?
ReplyDeleteYAY!!! Thank you, Major!
ReplyDeleteMajor-
ReplyDeleteYeah... just what IS up with Google-? The pre-Skull Rock pirate ship always seems so wide-open. I wonder what the woman in the lower-right corner is holding in her hand-?
Thanks, Major - and thanks for the quick fix, too.
That first picture is rather strange, in that the group is "split up." Two are inside the eating area, and three are outside the eating area. Did two crawl in, or did three crawl out, for this picture? And the biggest question: Which group did the photographer belong to?
ReplyDelete...and it's also strange that NOBODY wanted the child in the picture!! (I just noticed that child...were they trying to hide her?)
ReplyDeleteHa, ha! Sue beat me to the "Let's hide the baby behind the geraniums!" comment.
ReplyDeleteMajor, you are correct. That second photo was taken outside the Plaza Pavilion. The building in the upper left corner of the photo is "Coke Corner," and the interior lights we can see to the right of the man, are inside that "back entrance" to the Penny Arcade. Today, that doorway leads to the Candy Palace.
To me, it looks like the group on the left ran into some friends (also known as "group on the right" and decided to snap a picture of the event. By the way, they brought that tree with them. You never know when you might need one.
ReplyDeleteThe Pirate Ship photo is nice, but it looks very flat to me. Help! We're stuck in 2D Land!!!
I love how the "Push" waste receptacle is the main focus of the second photo. She is the belle of the ball. These are both nice photos to look at on a cold NY day. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteLou and Sue, now I am wondering if I am going to have to deal with this issue for the more-than-100 posts that I already have in the queue. Nooooooooo……!
ReplyDeleteNanook, I chalk this up to 2020 striking again! I’m amazed that I did not notice the object in that woman’s hand. It’s something on a card that says “Disneyland” at the top, but otherwise I can’t ID it. Frustrating!
Lou and Sue, I just assumed that they were all about to eat at the Plaza Pavilion, and somebody said, “Hey, let me take a picture of everybody before we dine”. But… it’s anybody’s guess.
Lou and Sue, that damn baby was a real diva! They’d had enough of her shenanigans.
TokyoMagic!, thank you for pointing out the Penny Arcade, I didn’t know that it had a back entrance! Yes, I’ve been inside the Penny Arcade, but it’s been many years. Very interesting!
stu29573, maybe some of the group was “east coast” and the others were “west coast”. They can’t get along! There might even be a rumble. I often bring a small tree or potted shrub with me wherever I go, in case I feel the need to stand behind it. Personal interactions can be overwhelming. I think the 2D look of the second photo is thanks to the (frankly) poor composition. Sorry, photographer from 1958!
Divajones48, those particular Fantasyland trash cans, with that funny “tent” cap on them, are so strange. I truly wonder if they are unique to Disneyland? I’ve never seen any others like that. I also just noticed that none of the Skyway gondolas have people in them, I wonder if the ride was down for Matterhorn construction??
I so want that baby to wake up this morning, find this blog, and say 'OMG, that's ME behind the geraniums!'
ReplyDeleteThanks, Major, for some great Snoozers!

Geraniums
ReplyDeleteGeraniums
Are very good for hiding babies
Their craniums
Their craniums
Don’t disappear behind the daisies
What an odd pair of odd photos.
ReplyDeleteTokyo, thank you for identifying the photo location. Mom had a sweater just like Hat Girl’s.
Maybe two groups met each by accident and formed up for a photo? Can’t be that, since they are all together in Adventureland.
The Teacup CM is wearing the men’s “Air Force” uniform with white shirt & tie.
Thanks Major, hope you can solve that hosting problem.
JG
I always get here too late for the posting problems. It seems like nothing is working the same anymore. I really like those shades short skirt lady is wearing. I want em. I have a soft spot for the pirate ship, heck, for all the originals. I only wish I could have seen her one more time before she was gone. Thanks Major.
ReplyDeleteSo what do you do when you want to take a photo with your friends and you realize that a tree is dividing you? You actually pose with it - bring it into the group - make it feel included! I think it's one of those odd impulsive acts one makes when they encounter unexpected situations. Perhaps she was feeling like Audrey Hepburn that day.
ReplyDeletePhoto 2 suffers from the strange effects of "mystery spot" skewed gravity that sometimes affected Disneyland. Fortunately my current camera alerts me to such disturbances - my life was a wreck before it. The castle off in the distance it enchanting. I also notice the fence behind the pirate ship. I assume one could see into Storybook Land better in those days?
zach, it would certainly be possible for a baby to recognized his/her parents. I would love it!
ReplyDeleteMelissa, personally I like poems about daffodils, and the morning dew, and the bluebird’s mirthful song. But Geraniums are good too!
JG, like I said, these are both “almost rejects”. But I have certainly posted slides that are worse than these. Hat girl’s cable-knit sweater looks pretty classic, I’ll bet a lot of people had similar examples! If you look at the linked photos (in the second paragraph), you’ll see all of these people were together at other points in their trip - it feels like they all went together as a big group. I wonder if the tucked in tie of the Teacups CM was considered a nod to safety??
Jonathan, like I said to Lou and Sue, I hope I don’t have to deal with this issue at midnight EVERY night for the next four months. The weird thing is that I made these posts just like hundreds of others, so it can’t be ME! Yes, those Devo shades are pretty cool and would look good even today.
Omnispace, well basically I think you are right… they either had to walk somewhere else to take their group photo, or figure out what to do with that tree. Or nobody thought about it at all, which seems pretty likely, when you notice how many photos I’ve shared with the back of somebody else’s head right in the foreground! I feel like I’m missing a reference with the Audrey Hepburn comment. Holly Golightly maybe? I usually don’t straighten out skewed photos because I want to show as much of the original image as possible, but I’m starting to rethink that strategy. It IS a little disconcerting. And I do believe that folks could see into Storybook Land better back then.
There's never a snoozer on your blog Major! KS
ReplyDeleteI always enjoy a weird vintage clothing print, since I'm a wearer of unusual prints myself. Middle sunglasses lady in the first photo seems to have lanterns on her blouse. Usually if I'm walking toward the spot this photo was taken, it means I'm on my way out of Disneyland. Or I'm going to get a hot dog at Coke Corner.
ReplyDeleteI like the striped light posts by the teacups. And the trash can is pretty unique, why I want to start wasting paper right now to have something to put in it! The lady's mystery card almost looks like the pins they sell now, but those weren't around then. The shape suggests Tinker Bell to me...
Thanks for making sure we can see the pictures, Major.
The bluebird’s mirthful song was all
ReplyDeleteAbout the daffodils,
And how they caught the morning’s dew
Upon the verdant hills.
Ah, merry bluebird! Do you sing
Of sweet geraniums?
“Why no, fair maid,” the bluebird said,
And pooped upon my thumb.
KS, ha ha, I appreciate the kind words, even though I know there have been at least SOME snoozers!
ReplyDeleteKathy!, yeah, I like some of the crazy prints on men’s shirts back in the ‘50s and early ‘60s. Not necessarily aloha shirts, although those can be great too. The “lantern” print reminds me of some of the nutty wallpaper patterns I’d seen in people’s homes; my old employer had wallpaper that had old motorcar engravings, as if taken from 100 year-old ads. WHY? Guess he liked cars. Why waste paper? Waste EVERYTHING! That’s my motto!
Melissa, you did it! Finally a poem that is worth a darn. It has everything! Even poop, and most poets won’t go there. But YOU did!
@ Melissa-
ReplyDeleteAhhh... I've been there. (That's why I'm partial to blue jay's). This is sheer poetic genius.
Wordsworth's editor was constantly sending his poems back with "NEEDS MORE BIRD POOP" scrawled in the margins.
ReplyDeleteMajor, I probably should have said "side entrance" instead of "back entrance." That side entrance for the Penny Arcade, is in the former location of the Cole's of California shop, right next to where the piano sits on the Coke Corner patio. They even put a fancy marquee over that side entrance, which they have left up, even though the Candy Palace has now been expanded into that part of the Penny Arcade:

Welcome to GDB After Dark.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of Cole, you must see this extremely rare photo of a Cole of California photo setup here on GDB.
