Nice Jungle Cruise, 1950's

I love the old Jungle Cruise, but I admit that I am generally not super thrilled when I find a batch of slides taken by a guest as they explored the Rivers of the World. But today's pix are not the usual views, and that makes them "aces" in my book!

First up is this nice shot of the Orinoco Adventuress as it is about to disappear into the misty jungle. I've never seen another photo taken from this angle, and I'm not sure where the photographer was standing; wherever it was, it was not a place that most other guests used as a "photo spot". Notice the little shack in the background (to the left), normally seen straight-on or from the other side.

And here's a good photo of the front side of water; Schweitzer Falls, before the water was dyed an odd blue-green. But the thing that really gets my attention is the shirt (or is it a tunic?) on the Skipper! Look at that thing, it's magnificent, with a riot of bright-orange tigers and a striped pattern that resembles a wildfire. I want that shirt!

I'm with you, Major - Step-aside all you 'trendy leopard spots'... tiger stripes are the new 'spots'-! (I'm a 15½-33).

    Thanks, Major.

Major, that shot was taken by one of the hippos.

  3. I also want that shirt! Maybe the print is depicting Shere Khan as he runs through the burning grasslands?

  4. The background of that picture of the boat is blurred, so it must be going 50+ mph! ZROOOM!!!

I agree with you on how awesome that tiger print is, Major. It's so cool that I think they should make it the standard costume for every CM - from the tour guides to the Mark Twain captain. ;-) Thanks for the fun ones today!

  5. I think that I just combined "vroom" and "zoom" and invented a new word.

  6. I want a Jungle Cruise boat! Years ago, Six Flags Over Texas sold off its Riverboat Ride boats (they had replaced the attraction with a roaring rapids piece of junk). Even though I had no money to buy one, and nowhere to keep it, I still consider it a lost opportunity in my life. Sigh...

  7. I agree with Lou and Sue, those pesky Pottos will do anything to get a good shot. I think I remember that shirt from Saturday Night Fever. Thanks Major.

  8. Yep, JC Shannon, that shot was taken by a hippo. I just saw it on their blog, Hippos Shoot Back.

  9. Nanook, I’m sad to admit that I have no tiger stripes in my wardrobe. The world is a cruel, cruel place.

Lou and Sue, it’s the only logical explanation!

TokyoMagic!, I thought of that exact same thing, believe it or not.

Andrew, if there’s one thing the Jungle Cruise is famous for, it’s the speed of the boats! I think a little of that background blur is due to a short focal range, but what do I know. Not much! It would be kind of cool if they reproduced that shirt (in a limited run) for sale at the park.

Andrew, hey, if Shakespeare can invent words (“bandit”, “eventful”, “bedazzled”, “new-fangled”, and so on) , why can’t you?

stu29573, I would assume that those boats would be “sea worthy” on a regular river or lake - perhaps not the ocean - that would be one of the ultimate collectibles!

Jonathan, now I am imagining a Disney+ series about the Jungle Cruise hippos. A sitcom with a laugh track. MAKE IT SO.

Lou and Sue, hippos have a blog, too??

The Jungle Cruise is one of the best. The format is flexible enough that it can withstand fairly major changes without them becoming noticeable.

At least so I say now. After the forthcoming "upgrades" I may feel differently.

The striped shirt is amazing. I wonder how long those lasted?

  11. Love the view of the boat leaving the dock. The photo is actually taken by a Guest standing in line. Strange that there are not more taken from this vantage point.

    Always your pal,

  12. Major, that hippo series sounds amazing. I was thinking they could get Meghan Markle to do voiceovers, sort of a companion to the elephant documentary she narrated for Disney +. But then again, maybe not; they want people to actually finish watching the program.

The view of the falls in the sun is one of those fantastic you-are-there photos. Not post card perfect, but capturing several nuances of being on a crowded Jungle Cruise boat listening to the skipper tell his corny jokes. And I agree, that's an amazing shirt with the tigers!

  14. The little kid with his hand on the side of the boat is the only one who realizes someone on the dock is taking a picture. Hi kid! I see you, too! Welcome to the twenty-first century! I wish I could tell you it was all rockets to the moon and bathrooms of tomorrow. Enjoy your ride!

  15. JG, ha ha, as I was reading your first sentence, I was thinking, “Except for….”. But you got there before me. From what I’ve observed, the Jungle Cruise’s costumes changed constantly, unlike some attractions. I’m not sure why that ride more than others, but it sure seems to be the case.

Matthew, I agree, you’d think that if people were waiting at that same spot, plenty of them would have snapped a few pictures from there. And yet… this is the only one in my collection that is like this.

Chuck, I had to look up who Meghan Markle is - I guess I’m not a big follower of Britain’s Royalty! The name was familiar, but I was originally thinking of Megan Mullally. Was Meghan Markle’s narration of the elephant documentary terrible?

Omnispace, it’s also nice to see Schweitzer Falls really flowing, and not just trickling like it does now. I’ve never understood why they turned it down so much, except that it must cost a lot to run those big pumps.

Melissa, ha ha, I wish I could tell you it was all rockets to the moon and bathrooms of tomorrow, that is for sure.

Better yet, given for free to Major all GDB bloggers for their constant promotion of the Disneyland magic.

  17. Major, her narration is...odd. Unusually perky. Not Win Hibler.
