Randos From September 1966

These are not just random, but they are pretty dull too. Like this very "meh" look at "It's a Small World" and it's canal boats as seen from the Disneyland Railroad. The ride must have been brand-new at that point, and Walt Disney hadn't passed away yet, which makes ya think.

And here's the four zillionth photo of Monstro the Insult Whale. "Whaddaya staring at, dummy? Take a picture, it'll last longer!".

  1. Now this is the Disneyland of my youth that I loved. No crowds. Thank you, Major.

  2. Major-

The 'insult whale'-! Is he the cousin of Triumph the Insult Comic Dog-? Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak. Monstro has a million of 'em-!

No wonder I like the Storybook Land Canal Boats so much.

    Thanks, Major.

  3. It's the future site of the seating for Small World Stage!

From now on, I'll imagine Monstro speaking with Don Rickles' voice.

  4. Ok, new great idea- link the Storybook boats, IASW boats and pirates boats into one long ride! In the in-between parts, put Star Wars characters along the bank! And link all the boats together in one omnimover type chain! And the only way to get into Disneyland is to give Disney unlimited access to all of your assets!!! And...and...and...I need to take my medicine now.

  5. Lou and Sue, look at you with your italics and bold type!

Nanook, Monstro is not related to Triumph, but they served in the Army together, so they have a bond. Like brothers! It’s a very touching story. Is the “light travels faster than sound” a genuine Don Rickles zinger?

Chuck, I was actually wondering what that odd little area was for, thanks for solving it!

stu29573, you are definitely thinking outside the box, and in my opinion you should be the new president of Disneyland. Heck, you should be KING of Disneyland! Be sure to take your medications, but don’t throw out any expired pills, give them to me.

  6. Major-
Unfortunately, I have no idea where that line came from; I only know it isn't one of mine. (It just struck me as funny, and seemed reasonably-unoffensive).

  7. Stu, your funny comment today got me thinking about how many different water rides and water modes of transportation that Disneyland has (or had), over the years. Besides the pedal/paddle boats that were outside the DL Hotel years ago, I can think of 12. Compared to other amusement parks, I think that's one of the many things that has always set Disney apart - along with beautiful flowers and landscaping.

Interesting how Disneyland has an attraction that not only allows you to ride into the mouth of Monstro, but also walk up and touch him.

On a side note, hi TokyoMagic and Major Pepperidge! Been a while since I've seen you all on my blog. Be sure to drop by and comment. Really miss hearing your feedback! :D

  9. Sue, I never really thought about it before, but you're right - there have been a lot of water-based attractions at Disneyland. I count 13, but I won't be surprised if I've missed one:

    Jungle Cruise
    Pirates of the Caribbean
    Splash Mountain
    Indian War/Davy Crockett Explorer Canoes
Mike Fink's Keelboats (an odd name, since the Bertha Mae was actually Davy Crockett's boat))
    Rafts to Tom Sawyer Island
    Mark Twain Steamboat
    Sailing Ship Columbia
    Storybook Land Canal Boats
    it's a small world
    Phantom Boats
    Motor Boat Cruise
    Submarine Voyage

  10. Nanook, it’s a good line, and yes, not offensive! I am constantly editing myself in case a comment or “joke” might be interpreted as hurtful or insulting, though I’m sure some bad things have still slipped through once in a while.

Lou and Sue, oh great, now I’m going to have to sit down and think about something. Thinking hurts! My brain muscles are weak and flabby.

The Magic Ears Dudebro, not only that, you actually go inside Monstro! “Listen, I’m sure you’re a very nice whale, but we just met”. I’ll be sure to go to your blog today Dudebro, I apologize… with so much time, I’ve been churning and burning on scans and posts.

Chuck, ha ha, as I was going down the list I was thinking, “He forgot the Phantom Boats!”. But you didn’t. And I never really thought about how the official name for the Keelboats invoked Mike Fink’s name. They blew it, they could have listed Davy’s Keelboat as another attraction! Kind of like how the Skyway managed to be two attractions.

  11. Chuck, we both forgot the Matterhorn!! The bobsleds dip into the water, too. (I forgot about Splash Mountain, btw.). I wonder if we’re forgetting any more?? Of course, there are many attractions where you can view water - but I’m not counting those.

Bright, sunny pics today! I've always thought the gardens in front of it's a small world were an incredible place - wished the exterior portion of the flume was longer. It seems Stu could fix that.

The topiary shrubs are always a lot of fun, including that huge carrot, er.. upside-down squid, er.. cocktail garnish? You can tell guests are impressed, whatever it is.

I think Monstro privately wishes he was a magical whale.

  13. @ Chuck-
Thanks for the list - and also the link to the seating for the Small World Stage-! I can't think of anything else, either, unless we want to consider the 'splash-down' at the end of the Matterhorn as a ".5" - making the list an annoying 13.5...

  14. Hmmmm....I think they actually need to float in order to count. I'm disqualifying the Matterhorn bobsleds and sending them to bed with no supper. I have spoken. ...or typed... ...or something...
(I think the subs actually float a little...in my mind anyway...)

  16. Lou and Sue, there is definitely water in the Matterhorn ride, but I don’t know if we can really count it as a “water-based” attraction. Or I’m wrong, who knows.

Omnispace, it looks like there is an area of grass that is fenced off for no apparent reason. Maybe that’s where they let the horses graze. Yeah, that’s it. Like you I get a kick out of the topiaries - as a kid I really thought those were so amazing. I consider an upside-down squid to be a cocktail garnish, but that’s just me.

Nanook, in the Mine Train you go behind the waterfalls, and take a trestle over the bears river. And you could get a glass of water in the Golden Horseshoe!

stu29573, what about the glass of water?!?!. There’s NO WAY you can reject my idea.

Lou and Sue, shhhhh, they’re placebos.

stu29573, I applaud your choice of cereal.

  17. If you need .5 go ahead and count the C&H sugar bag on the fountain as an attraction. We all see it like that, right?

You forgot the Crane Bathroom of Tomorrow exhibit with its "fun with water" interactive water sculpture.

I'm late to comment, but thanks everyone for the great conversation, especially the comprehensive list of water attractions.

I like that first photo because, as Chuck points out, it documents a rarely seen corner of the Park. The topiary garden is a stroke of genius, in my opinion, and I love it.

@Zach, that sugar bag is definitely an attraction in my book.
