Two Castles, September 1966

Disneyland has multiple graveyards, and several different trains, and more than one castle (which might surprise some folks). For instance, there's Cinderella's Castle in Storybook Land, perched high on a stony peak - because Cinderella was afraid of lizards. Who can forget the song, "I Freakin' Hate Lizards"?

Pumpkin coach alert!

I'm bending the definition of "castle" a little bit, but it's for the children! Over on Tom Sawyer Island there was Castle Rock - a geological formation carved by eons of wind, water, and bugs. Cinderella hated bugs too, remember? There's the song, "These Damn Bugs Are Annoying" that we all sang in grade school.

You could live in Castle Rock, I suppose, but the nearby treehouse was much more comfortable.

Are there any other castles in Disneyland (besides Sleeping Beauty Castle, of course)?

Yep, I recall the rather large spun glass castle in the glass maker shop.

  2. The Arendelle castle has unfortunately been added to Storybook Land at the expense of the three mills, from the Academy Award-winning animated short, The Old Mill. Elsa's ice castle (or is it an ice palace?) was also added at the same time and in the same area.

  3. Major-

"Pumpkin Coach Alert". Man, it's sure hard to see. Kinda like Where's Waldo. (Say - there's an idea for yet another game from Disney merchandise).

    Thanks, Major.

  4. Oh,and Prince Eric's castle from The Little Mermaid was added to Storybook Land, back in the 90's. Maybe they should add several more castles to Storybook Land. After all, Snow White lived in one castle with her wicked stepmother and then went on to live in another castle with the Prince. Perhaps the Big Bad Wolf lived in a castle? How do we know that he didn't?

  5. If they can't put a castle for Princess Leia in Storybook Land then as far as I'm concerned they can rip out the whole Storybook Land and replace it with something better like a Frozen Village with restaurants and lots of shops. I'm still waiting for Disney to open a "Do You Want to Build A Snowman" shop where I can build my own Olaf for $100. You can have the droids.

  6. DCA deserves a Castle, too. Maybe they could add the Punisher to Marvel Land.

  7. And a little model of the House on Haunted Hill, as a tribute to William Castle.

  8. Lou and Sue, I don’t know the spun glass castle! Is it still there?

TokyoMagic!, oh yeah, those stinky castles in Storybook Land. I guess I wouldn’t mind so much except that I am one of eight people who did not particularly love “Frozen”. It was just okay.

Nanook, sometimes the best things in life are hard to see. Like neutrinos. Think about it!

TokyoMagic! I don’t know if we can count the palace from Agrabah (“Aladdin”) as a “castle”, but… it is definitely related. Why not make the whole ride just a series of castles?

    K. Martinez, there was (and maybe still is) a push to make Princess Leia and “official” Disney Princess, whatever that means. Unless I am mistaken, all current Disney Princesses are from animated films. It seems odd to suddenly lump in a live person, even one as beloved as Carrie Fischer.

Chuck, uh, does the Punisher live in a castle?? Signed, not a comic book guy.

Melissa, best. idea. ever. They’d need to include “EMERGO”!

Major, I really don't know if the spun glass castle IS still there . . . maybe someone else can answer that question for us . . . I sure hope it's still there!

Also, Happy Father's Day! to all you dads out there!

Sue (one of the other eight that did not love "Frozen, " though Olaf was cute and I'd be willing to build my own at K. Martinez's shop)

  10. @ "Lou and Sue"-

Chalk-up another one who was less-than-enamored with Frozen. It wasn't all bad; but most of it was.

  11. What about the evil queen's castle at the entrance to Snow White's Scary Adventures?

  12. Penna. Andrew, I considered that, too, but I wasn't sure if it would count since it's still part of the same structure as Sleeping Beauty Castle, although it's clearly intended to represent a different castle. Anyone know who the ultimate arbiter on that one is/

not a comic book guy, the Punisher's "real" name is Frank Castle.

Major, wouldn't Princess Leia qualify as a Disney Princess since her appearance in Rouge One was animated?

  13. I love the punkin, and I always look for it. I have never lived in a castle, but I was stationed at Castle AFB in Atwater Ca. Great memories of king of the hill at Castle Rock. Thanks for the great pics today, Major.

  14. But lizards eat bugs...

  15. Well, yeah, that's why Cinderella had so many damn bugs, because she got rid of all the freaking lizards in Act 1.

  16. MAJOR: there’s also King Triton’s Castle visible thru the waterfall at the Storybook Canal Boat storage entrance ......

  17. If you introduce a lizard in the 1st Act you had better use is it in Act 2. This us bugging me.

There has to be a castle or palace somewhere in IASW, but I can't recall one specifically. The Taj Mahal is a tomb, not a palace, so that's out.

  19. There are definitely buildings-that-look-like-castles in it's a small world. The one in England looks like it could be either the Tower of London (castle) or Hampton Court (palace) or some combination thereof. There are other crenellated towers in other countries that I can't identify.
