This lazy Sunday gives me the opportunity to use up some fairly "blah" Frontierland photos that I just couldn't bring myself to use on any other day (because Sundays mean low viewership, see?).
Here's an unremarkable look at Fort Wilderness (from 1964), probably from the deck of the Mark Twain. It's almost obscured by the lush landscaping. The tippy-top of the Matterhorn shows up, all the way from Tomorrowland!
This one is from a lot dated "June 1959", and shows a CM at the dock where the Mark Twain just left for its 10-minute (ish?) trip around the river. Unless the Columbia was running too, he can take it easy for a while.
A different 1959 lot had this photo of the Friendly Indian Village. It's small, but it's cozy, and all of the men and women are busy preparing hides, grinding corn, drying meat, or performing other daily tasks necessary for survival on the Great Plains.
Major-
ReplyDeleteI love all the 'anglers' looking for a nibble right there on TSI. (I wonder just how many of the successful "catches" ended up in a trash can somewhere in the Park-?)
Thanks, Major.
The Fort Wilderness pic is my favorite. It's exactly what the name implies. A fort in the "wilderness".
ReplyDeleteIt reminds me of the story of when WED decided on calling the Contemporary "Tempo-Bay" and Roy Disney shot it down saying “I just don’t like it. I like Contemporary. I like names that are simple and say what they are. The other name is phony and plastic.” I agree with Walt's brother. Thanks, Major.
Nanook, I was wondering how many of the successful "catches" actually made it on the dinner plate.
It's Sunday on the river and everyone seems to be enjoying a lazy day. A trip on the Mark Twain sounds good today, and everyone here is invited to join me. I like all these photos, they show how well the Imagineers did their job. After the Mark Twain, I think I will spend a couple of hours exploring TSI. last one to Castle Rock is a rotten egg. Thanks Major.
ReplyDeleteNow Nanook and Ken have me wondering something. Do you think anyone took the fish that they caught at the park, and had it stuffed and mounted? That would be a very unusual Disneyland souvenir!
ReplyDeleteThat CM's favorite song? "Come On Eileen."
ReplyDeleteI love the CM's period sunglasses - just like the one's Sam Clemens wore as a riverboat pilot.
ReplyDeleteNote there is no Hainted House yet.
Nanook, it really is kind of amazing how many people are fishing on that particular day. Who knew there was that much demand for such a simple activity? As for how many fish wound up in the trash… I know I wouldn’t want to carry a trout around all day. Yuck.
ReplyDeleteK. Martinez, I have never heard that story about Roy Disney rejecting “Tempo Bay” in favor of The Contemporary. His instincts were spot-on. Hey, what if they had put the fish on a stick and froze them? Sort an early version of turkey legs!
Jonathan, lazy days are some of the best days. I wish I could enjoy a nighttime trip on the Mark Twain, my absolute favorite, especially if you have a date with you. As a kid I would have happily spent hours on TSI, but my dad would never permit it. I can’t blame him.
TokyoMagic!, ha ha, it’s a funny idea! I doubt too many people would go to the trouble of mounting a fish that weighed less than a pound, but that doesn’t mean it never happened!
Melissa, I am ashamed to admit that it took me a moment to get it.
Chuck, they should have given CMs dark glasses that had little blue glass lenses, like the weird antique sort you sometimes see. That would have been cool!
The best Frontierland.
ReplyDeleteWait up, Jonathan, I'm coming with you!
