Everyone knows that the submarines at Disneyland took guests down to the deepest depths of the mysterious and crunchy Mariana Trench, but at first they depart from a warm and friendly tropical lagoon full of critters. Groupers, crabs, giant clams, sharks, octopi, and even the wily anemone.
The shadows in this one went too dark. "Inky" is a good word. So is "Stygian". What other words apply? At any rate, we can see the China Closet, the Timex shop, and the Eastman Kodak store. Go buy some film already!

ReplyDeleteI think that first image is one of the most lush-looking images from 'liquid space' I've yet to lay my eyes upon. And as for that shot from Main Street (200 block, East) - although it may be a bit dark - it's still nice to look at.
Thanks, Major.
It's too bad the personal cameras of yesterday couldn't' take pics back then like what can be done now. Just imagine the original Submarine Voyage underwater scenes in the actual show building like the graveyard of lost ships and lost city of Atlantis. That would've been cool to see nice photos of that. Even the Rainbow Caverns would've been neat to capture. Otherwise, this is a beautiful underwater shot of the Subs Lagoon. Thanks, Major.
ReplyDeleteA high-school geography teacher's unfortunate blunder in applying a possessive apostrophe "S" when talking about the Mariana Trench, led to much teenage giggling and X-rated imagery in my and my friend's hormone-laden brains.
ReplyDeleteAny picture of Main Street is a winner in my book, Major!
And sandwiched in there in deep dark profile is the silhouette studio.
ReplyDeleteHa, ha, Patrick! Dark profile....silhouette. It took me a minute!
ReplyDeleteI miss the original Submarine Voyage!
@ Patrick-
ReplyDeleteAlso seen in the very dark, just to our left of the China Closet is the Ruggles China & Glass Shop, prior to it being 'absorbed' into the China Closet sometime around March, 1964.
Nanook, the water looks clearer than in so many other photos - they spent a little extra on chlorine that week. Glad you liked the Main Street shot!
ReplyDeleteK. Martinez, can you imagine the old time machine fantasy, only you could bring a modern digital camera with you?! Just tell curious onlookers that the camera is “European”.
Steve DeGaetano, I have actually seen it referred to as the “Marianas Trench” many times. Lucky for me I am too innocent and pure to understand what is so naughty. ;-)
Patrick Devlin, mmmm, sandwich….
TokyoMagic!, oh I didn’t even get that. I’m not so smart.
Nanook, you can’t have too many china shops at an amusement park. I think there should have been a shop that sold bedpans and catheters. Only with Tinkerbell and Dopey decals applied to them.
The silhouette shop is only a shadow of it's former self.
