Hippos & Smiley

That ol' Jungle Cruise - sure, it changes every now and then, but much of the attraction still feels a lot like it did 60 years ago.

My three mansions already have swimming pools, but if I buy another one, I will be sure to put hippos in that pool. They're so fun and friendly! Why, a hippo would never hurt anyone. All they want is the occasional hug or belly rub, and maybe a pumpkin or two to eat on Halloween. Some would say that they make perfect pets.

There's "Old Smiley"; he's laughing it up after reading some jokes on some Dixie Riddle Cups. Man, those things were hilarious. "If an athlete gets athlete's foot, what does an astronaut get? Missile toe!". "What's green and sings? Elvis Parsley!". "Which is faster, heat or cold? Heat - you can catch cold!". See? No wonder Smiley is chuckling.

Hippos always manage to scare the crap out of me, but I still love 'em. And I never tire of seeing the hippo pics. This one's a good one.

I'd forgotten about the Dixie Cup. We used to have a Dixie dispenser adhered to the bathroom wall in which dinky little cups were used to gargle and rinse with. And yeah, those riddle cups were something else. Is the product even made anymore? Seems kind of wasteful.

Always appreciate Jungle Cruise pics. Thanks, Major.

Dixie Riddle Cups! Now there's a blast from the past. Ken, I had also forgotten about those. We had the bathroom wall dispenser with the tiny cups too. We never had the larger kitchen cups or dispenser. I think the riddles were limited to those. Of course, I could be wrong.

Thanks for these, Major. And as usual, you slay me!

Wow, Dixie Riddle Cups - you ARE old. Yes, pretty sure they were limited to the larger, kitchen size. We were a privileged family - we had both the kitchen wall dispenser AND the bathroom dispenser. Both of which still exist in the old house. There's even an unopened box of Return of the Jedi Dixie cups moldering away in the basement.

Ah, those riddle cups! I loved those. My grandmother always kept them in her kitchen when I was a child in the Seventies. I was quite surprised when I went to her house a couple of summers back for the last time (she died last year at the age of 97 having recently moved into a nursing home) and found that she still had a mounted Dixie Cup dispenser with new cups! She only had regular cups, but I wonder if the company has kept up with the trends – Angry Birds and Pokemon, say? I'm somewhat shocked that Disney seemed to have missed out on that licensing opportunity back in the day.

I want a hippopotamus for Christmas... Oops.

I love the water color. So deliciously murky and nowhere near aqua green-blue. Mysterious things could be lurking just below the surface!

K. Martinez, there’s no need to be afraid of a silly old hippo! Just look them in the eye and repeat the word “sassafras” over and over. Next thing you know, the hippo will be your best pal. My guess is that Dixie Cups went away because they really did add to our landfills unnecessarily.

TokyoMagic! I don’t know, the cups seemed pretty small to me - but Dixie did make those smaller cups made out of folded paper that you still see today. I used to like the ones that looked like little cones! We had a dispenser for the riddle cups in our bathroom.

Scott Lane, Return of the Jedi Dixie cups, who knew. Hopefully there are plenty of Ewoks.

Pegleg Pete, nowadays kids probably carry bottled water everywhere they go. Just like everyone else! My grandmother was pretty highfalutin’, she only liked glasses, no paper cups in her house. I hate to think how many of her tumblers I dropped and broke over the years.

Patrick Devlin, I wonder what the thinking was behind changing the realistic, muddy color to a phony “ty-d-bowl” blue-green?

Major-

Evidently our family took the 'act of drinking from a waxed, paper cup' very seriously, as we never had riddle cups. Drat-! We did, however, replace our original kitchen dispenser with a more "modern" unit some time in the 1960's, and often bought cups with other "hip" designs.

Dixie Cups (Dixie Products) is very much still around, and continues to sell disposable paper cups. And I see back in 1988 for Mickey's 60th birthday, Dixie produced special 3-oz. bathroom cups - LOOK HERE.

And in 1991, had a "Fun & Games with Mickey & Friends" line of bathroom cups. Just LOOK HERE.

And Dixie is currently selling a 7-oz. drinking cups with Disney Cartoon Characters. Who knew-?

My favorite paper "cups" have to be the flat, paper drinking cups - seemingly a favorite on every movie or TV set in Hollywood back in the day. (One can only wonder what's used these days). Obviously this 'form' of cup takes up the least amount of space both when new, and when used, but using them always felt as if this was to be your last drink before 'the handle was pulled' and the end had arrived.

TRY THIS for the second link.

Well spotted, Nanook – and here I was thinking Disney had missed a trick vis-a-vis Dixie Cups!

Whoa, Dixie cups must have been universal! We had a bathroom dispenser too. I remember drinking cinnamon-flavored Lavoris mouthwash (bright red) out of those.

All long gone.

That alligator is concerned, I can just see him allegating.
