Here's another post featuring photos from the personal collection of Steve Stuart, also called "Nanook" by Interpol. Today's selection is sort of random, though you might say that it shows what life in SoCal might have been like for a kid back then. Was Steve's childhood always full of sunshine, or does it just look that way?! Here's Steve:
WHERE AM I-?
It’s 1957. If I had to wager a guess, I’d say I’m at the Farmers Market in Los Angeles – but who really knows. As I didn’t go on to become a florist, I don’t know why I’m fondling the gourds, but perhaps I was merely striking a pose. I’m uncertain where to begin with those shorts, so the less said the better. (But I’ll happily entertain snarky comments-!)
JUDY’S BIRTHDAY:
As I’m wearing the same outfit, and Judy’s house (yes, the same Judy who we spied earlier at Tom and Huck’s Treehouse and sitting in the engine for the Mine Train), was located near the Farmer’s Market, I’m thinking the previous shot may very well have been taken there – or maybe the Town & Country across the street. Looking at the giant present, this tranquil scene appears to be Judy’s birthday and judging from the Picasso-esque gift-wrapping style, I appear to be responsible for the devil-may-care finished product. I feel fairly confident it’s not loaded with gourds, but then again – what six year old wouldn’t jump for joy upon receiving such a package, I ask you-?
FRONT YARD:
This picture was a favorite of my folks, for obvious reasons. Heck, even I like it-! Unfortunately, I haven’t the foggiest idea what became of my [well-used] Murray wagon.
It's enough to make one pine for those seemingly golden days! Thank you as always to Steve Stuart.

ReplyDeleteSteve, What a wonderful image the last photo is! Having now seen many of your family photos, you seem like you were a genuinely happy kid. Thanks again. Your photos have added a lot to visiting GDB.
ReplyDeleteAnd thank you too, Major.
Great photos as always, 'Nook!
ReplyDeleteThose were the days! These are beautiful views, Steve. :-D Thanks for sharing them with us!
ReplyDeleteNice pics Steve. I must say you seem to be much more together than I was in '57. I was 7 and no ways near as cool.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing these glimpses back. Definitely brings back thoughts of my youth.
ReplyDeleteJG
Not exactly a young Derek Zoolander but you were striking a pose in picture #1. Once again great snapshots from the past. Thanks for sharing and Major for posting.
ReplyDeleteYes, more wonderful pics, Nanook! You were a child fashion plate. Did you ever do any modeling? That's how a lot of the "Brady Bunch" kids started out! Oh, and Anderson Cooper too!
ReplyDeleteI still have my "little red wagon" (from Sears) that was a gift from Santa when I was 3 years old. It's in the attic of my mom's garage, but I think it's rusting away up there.
Thanks for sharing these, Nanook (and Major!)
To all us Boomers...yes, those were the days. KS
ReplyDeleteHey! Who took my red wagon? I had it here just fifty-five years ago and now I can't find it! How am I going to use it as the world's smallest swimming pool if I ain't got it? Darn...
ReplyDeleteDear All-
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comments.
Yes - I really did look as though I was the poster child for 1950's happiness. What happened to all that-??!! Now, it all seems to have been replaced with a dose of cynicism, along with a great love for sarcasm. Oh - for those 'other' times. But I do make people laugh... because of the things I say - not the way I look - or so I've been told. Hee hee.
Based on these, and previous images, I do [at least] give the aura of having some sort of modeling in my background, but both that and having interest in gourds and/or flowers never materialized. I DO pay more attention than most guys, it seems, in what I choose to wear, but I'd never be mistaken for a Fashionista-! And I NEVER follow trends.
Sorry I'm late, Stevenook, but thanks again for another great set of photos.
