Snapshots, March 1974

It's snapshot time! These aren't the greatest, but they'll do.

Groovy people stroll past the Corner Cafe on an overcast day... it makes me wonder if these weren't actually taken months earlier. We'll never know.  The gentleman to the left... I am digging his lilac-colored outfit! Very cool.

All of the food at this restaurant is square or rectangular, so that you are actually eating corners. Brilliant!

I went to Switzerland years ago. Imagine my disappointment when I found out that they do not actually travel by Skyway. I looked forward to passing through the Alps, thousands of feet in the air. Switzerland... ya blew it. I can't ever forgive them, never mind that the hotels were the cleanest and most comfortable, and the food was good. A guy can only put up with so much.

Much like trying to take a photo of Bigfoot, this attempt at photographing a passing Baloo resulted in a blur.  Some say that he is just a hoax - a man in a costume. But I believe in him!

  1. Major-

I believe "lilac-colored" clothing was the official color for the Corner Cafe. Great POV shot of the Matterhorn.

    Thanks, Major.

  2. I like the denim outfit, the elevator shoes, and the hat on the man in front of Lilac Guy. Baloo does exist, Major. They have an actual casting of his footprint out in front of the Matterhorn.

  3. Love the Coke Corner patio image. And yeah, that denim outfit with elevator shoes and hat is cool! Louie the Lilac isn't so bad himself either. How can you not love 70's fashion!

All nice pics of what is probably my favorite decade at Disneyland. Thanks, Major.

  4. Nanook, unfortunately for me I wore my lime-green suit instead of my lilac-colored one. I didn't get the memo.

TokyoMagic!, I want to believe in Baloo, but I also want to believe in the Slender Man, the Moth Man, Nessie, and chupacabras.

    K. Martinez, Louis the Lilac! Milton Berle's finest moment. Now I wish I owned the complete "Batman" series on disk!

  5. All this talk of 70s fashion reminded me of this fun blog:

Nice picture of the Adventureland ticket booth in the 3rd shot background. One of the ticket sellers at the time is now the wife of a former JC cast member. She remains an active CM,supervising admissions at the Park's entrance these days.

  7. I think we need to give a shout-out to the gentleman strutting his plaid jacket right there in Adventureland.

    @ Steve DeGaetano-

My eyes are still burning from viewing those images on the 'plaid stallions' site. And to think, back in the day I had a sport coat not all that different from that very one. Horrors-!

  8. Steve DeGaetano, I just had to go spend a bunch of time over at that site you linked to. Gravitated to the toy section (of course). I had actually found that site before. They have a nice shot of some of the old Aurora model kits that I like. It’s a pretty cool site.

VERY Funny stuff today Major and some very groovy pics indeed!
    Thank you!

  10. In late 1975, my mother bought the whole family matching blue-grey Levi's shirts and had us pick out iron-on transfer logos that she then colored in with fabric paint. Everyone had their Zodiac sign and a series of other emblems that really made us look like a groovy family. We wore those things on every family vacation, and I was really sad when I outgrew mine.

Steve, thanks for sharing the Plaid Stallions website. The toy section has been one of my favorite corners of the Internet for years now.

  11. Steve DeGaetano, I’ve seen that blog before… so much plaid! MY EYES!!

KS, my impression is that there have been many romances/marriages among CMs. Seems like a nice way to meet!

Nanook, I had a red, white and blue plaid jacket when I was a kid - probably from Sears, probably polyester. It was wonderfully hideous.

Monkey Cage Kurt, I loved those Aurora models! My brother liked the ones with the glow-in-the-dark heads, but I preferred the non-glow versions - which is weird because I am generally a proponent of anything that glows.

JG, when will plaid come back in style?!

Chuck, I love it. Zodiac signs were so big back then; I had a sleeping bag with all of the signs of the zodiac - it barely kept me warm, but I didn’t care because it looked so good. I imagine your family driving around in a colorful bus, and hanging out with William S. Burroughs and Timothy Leary.

  12. I still build those old Aurora kits Major. The Prehistoric Scenes line was my favorite, but I’ve done a few of the Knights also. I do a LOT of customizing on them. I go by the name Kurtzoid everywhere else but here. If you type “Kurtzoid” into Google Images you’ll see a bunch of my Aurora builds.

@Major, I am wearing my plaid suit today, woven of finest polyester, :^D. As far as I am concerned, it never went out of style...
