I can't help smiling when I look at today's first image; my guess is that the photographer was a man, and he must have been fairly dazzled by the platinum blonde with her daring bare midriff as she strolls through Frontierland with her boyfriend. Pretty racy for 1966! Apparently they've already been through Adventureland. The fellow's t-shirt seems to be a knock-off of the Playboy bunny logo.
Meanwhile, over by the Autopia... actually, I'm not sure, is this the Fantasyland Autopia queue? My spidey senses say that it is. I've never noticed the fencing with that bright red outline before, it's pretty spiffy. And I thought that we might have another daring outfit on the lady with the purple top (was she actually the subject of this picture?); it appears as if she is wearing short shorts beneath her gossamer skirt (or genie pants?). The 60's!
Major-
ReplyDeleteThe first image is a real beaut-! In addition to her platinum blonde hair and hour glass figure, just where did our young lass pick-up that lei-? Her 'date' is carrying a Polaroid Swinger Camera in his left hand.
And the Fantasyland Autopia gets my vote, too. All those red-painted highlights really stand out. Now... that girl's outfit - yeeesh-! As revealing as the outfit on the gal in the first image might be, at least that girl can look back and feel proud. I'm sorry, but the one here is just downright ugly.
Thanks, Major.
Wow! The color in these shots is outstanding.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to more shots from this batch Major :D
I think technically, that couple is leaving New Orleans Square and just about to enter Frontierland. I only say that because they are standing on gray or green colored slurry and there is reddish colored slurry just a few feet in front of them. I wonder if that couple is still together? Maybe they have great-grandchildren now?
ReplyDeleteThere seems to be a lot of interesting fashion choices in that second pic. There is the guy with black knee-high dress socks. Then there is the girl with the floral print skirt that looks like a tablecloth that my mom used to have. Further to the right, we have a girl wearing flower print pants. And to the right of her is a boy with red socks. I have to admit that I had red socks at about that age, but I used to wear them with my peek-a-boo genie pants.
You guys are all too good on nailing locations. I'll add in the obvious Monorail beam over the Autopia load area, and in the first pic you can see the awnings on the Golden Horseshoe on the right with maybe a facade of the little mining town of Rainbow Ridge far back on the left.
ReplyDeleteYou guys are on a roll this morning! I was going to guess that maybe these were taken in an amusement park somewhere, but I wasn't entirely sure.
ReplyDeleteNote that nobody seems particularly concerned about the extreme peril the boy next to Genie Pants is in. He must be all of three feet off the ground without a harness, helmet, or safety spotter. Can CalOSHA assess retroactive fines? I wonder what the interest would be on a 50-year-old unpaid violation...
Hubba Hubba, both look like they just rolled in off an Austin Powers movie shoot. Oh behave. Thanks for posting, happy friday.
ReplyDeleteTrue, Chuck, how did we survive the 60's? Climbing railings with no harness; sliding around on the back seat of a car - unbelted!; playgrounds with actual GROUND underneath the (jaggged!) metal swings, sliding boards, and merry-go-rounds instead of bouncy recycled tires...
ReplyDeleteAlso have to echo walterworld - the color and sharpness of these 50 year old images is outstanding!
I spent most of my first Summer on FA (Fantasyland Autopia). One fun aspect was a position called "Backbridge" in which you roamed the roadway, watching for cars/guests in trouble. And then the best part was that there were access doors to the sub caverns under two of the overpasses, and I would always sneak a peak, watching the sail of subs gliding by. Great memories.
ReplyDeleteNanook, I was thinking that the lei must have come from the Tahitian Terrace, if not the Tiki Room. A Swinger camera, how appropriate. As for the second girl's outfit, it might not be the greatest, but I can't be too upset at see-through pants!
ReplyDeletewalterworld, I'm sorry to say that these two are the only two of their kind. I wish there was more!
TokyoMagic!, I agree, I was thinking that it looked like Frontierland in the background, although I did not even think about the color of the slurry. I wondered the same thing about the couple, if they stayed together, got married, etc. Those knee-high dress socks are cool, that's going to be my new look.
Patrick Devlin, good catch on Rainbow Ridge, I didn't even see it.
Chuck, these were taken in Knott's Berry Farm, over near the original potato stand. As for the young daredevil, it wasn't that long ago that I was at the park with my 8 year-old nephew; he was goofing around on a queue chain, and fell, basically landing on his head. I can still remember the sound!! By some miracle, he did not cry and make a scene, but he also declined to ride anything that looked even remotely intense.
Alonzo, that blonde is quite a dish!
Scott Lane, I remember some of the crazy playground equipment we had, including monkey bars that had rubber mats that were only slightly softer than asphalt. Remember how hot a metal slide could get? Yeow!
Anonymous, I have never heard of a "Backbridge", wonder where that name came from. I am jealous of being able to watch the subs from that unique perspective too.
Major, now I feel like an absolute heel. Glad your nephew was OK after his fall.
ReplyDeleteI remember waiting in line for Splash Mountain in about '95 behind a mom, her boyfriend, and her rambunctious 7-or-8-year-old son, Chas. As the line skirted the rocks around the splashdown area (which, as you may recall, are actually about a story and a half or so above the flume), Chas decided it would be cool to climb the rocks and jump around, all a foot or so from the edge. I can still hear the distracted mom's repeated, almost bored "Chas, get down from there," followed by his consistent noncompliance while she went back to ignoring him talking to the boyfriend. I was afraid I was going to see the kid disappear over the edge at any moment. Funny how different people perceive potential danger differently.
Chuck, I wasn't trying to make you feel like a heel! I was just recalling an accident from a frolicking kid (in this case, my nephew), because it seemed related. As for "Chas", his parents might be so worn down from his constant disobedience that they've gone completely numb. He'll probably be a future President!
ReplyDeletein the 60's and at least part of the 1970's guests were indeed offered complementary leis from hostesses upon entering the TAHITIAN TERRACE. I'm not sure about this being done at the Enchanted Tiki Room, but it's possible.
ReplyDeletegreat stuff today, everyone! :) Just got home from a long work day (did both my jobs today) and its always fun to see whats been observed on the Major's latest offerings.
ReplyDeleteThe first view is beautiful....love the colors and especially love the red belt and hip-huggers on our platinum blonde. :)
As for Ms. Genie Pants, Im afraid to say what I see :-O
I am also looking forward to more from this set! :)
Major - YES. I had one of those burn-your-little-b@!!s-off sliding boards in my own backyard. We used to "lube" it up with wax paper so we'd slide down faster.
ReplyDeleteAnd I see Google's finally posting me as "Scott" and not "Kenneth". 'Bout time! (although I didn't do anything to change it) Both names are mine but one I've always answered to and one I could never remember how to spell ("One N or two?") until filling out college applications in High School.
