Today I have two photos - portraits? - of the Disneyland Hotel's "Tower Building" (eventually named the "Sierra Tower"). The photos are from 1965; the tower was built in 1962, and the 118-foot tall tower added some 150 guest rooms to the Hotel complex. The exterior elevator was a distinctive feature, but it divided the building in such a way that, when the large sign was added at the top, it could not read "Disneyland Hotel". Instead, the pseudo-European moniker "Hotel Disneyland" was used.
Not long after these photos were taken, the Sierra Tower was expanded (it was called the Tower Annex, though it connected with the Tower building, to our left in this photo) adding another 160 rooms.
Major-
ReplyDeleteI was thinking with the similarity of the images today, one of them had a misspelled sign. (I kept hoping).
Welcome to the Hotel Disneyland
ReplyDeleteSuch a lovely place
Such a lovely face
Plenty of room at the Hotel Disneyland

You can find it here
One of the things I loved about the old Disneyland Hotel were all the palm trees on the property. And there were a lot of them. I can't remember if they're still there now though. Nice set today. Thanks, Major.
I just saw a large misspelled sign on a building in the San Fernando Valley, so you never know when somebody is going to screw up!
ReplyDeleteK. Martinez, you should join a 1970’s supergroup and make millions of dollars! I do like the look of those palm trees, it gives an overall feeling of tropical lushness.
These are great.
ReplyDeleteComing off a recent stay at the Disneyland Hotel (my first), I can report that the landscaping is incredibly lush and verdant. I can't confirm if any of the old palm trees from this era survive, since I never got to stay here in my youth, but they seem to have incorporated a lot of mature trees of all kinds into the planting buffer.
It's hard to believe that some of those walkways are only a few feet from West blvd, the jungle is so dense. Really well-designed and impeccably maintained.

That elevator once took lucky guests on an express ride to the 'Top Of The Park' lounge.
ReplyDeleteThat space is now the Disneyland Hotel concierge 'evening reception' space, or it was up to a few years ago.
Those were glory years for the Hotel. At this point, much like Disneyland itself, the 'powers that be' have pretty much ruined the old feel of the place. Although...I do enjoy Trader Sam's ;)
Thanks Major, and more Disneyland Hotel pictures, please!
