Here are two photos from August, 1963 that are pretty dull. Lucky you!
We're over by the queue for the Casey Jr. Circus Train, with a Skyway tower right next to the Casey Jr. ticket booth (which, to my knowledge, hasn't been used as a ticket booth since the earliest days). It's August, so some folks have have taken to relaxing in the shade to the right. Notice the little stage, as well.
Aaaaaand... here's a not-great photo of a Streetcar. These will be replaced with horse-drawn TIE fighters and X-wings - or so I hope!
I don't think I've ever noticed the base of the Skyway tower looking like that in other photos. In later years, wasn't there a tall concrete base around the metal posts?
ReplyDeleteThese are nice! Lots to see in the Casey Jr. pic. Cinderella's Castle is centered nicely. There's a Kodak Picture Spot sign and the little stage I know I've seen before.
ReplyDeleteTokyoMagic!, unfortunately I am not observant enough to be able to answer your question, but the Skyway tower base does look kind of naked.
ReplyDeleteK. Martinez, I appreciate your trying to find positive things to say about these! ;-)
Major, I even want to say that the top of the foundation had little pebbles pressed into the concrete like the areas around the Plaza used to have, but I believe the rocks on the top of the Skyway foundation had a coat of paint over them. I hope someone else remembers this and will confirm it!
ReplyDeleteTokyoMagic! even with the new Skyway buckets the tower bases appear to have no concrete base foundation. I'm trying to find photos of New Fantasyland to see if it changed then, but it's hard to see a clear view of the base.

TokyoMagic!, Here's New Fantasyland under construction and there appears to be no concrete bases in Fantasyland. I know there were none in Tomorrowland.

I can not find decent views for beyond New Fantasyland to 1994 though.
Ken, thank you for doing all that searching. I also did a search of the Major's and Dave's photos after leaving that comment, but couldn't find anything there. Those photos of the Fantasyland construction almost seem to have something blocking the base of the tower. I don't remember the tower by Mr. Toad necessarily having the concrete foundation (it may have), but I really remember the one by Casey Jr. having it. I looked through some of my books and found this pic. It isn't super clear, but the square concrete base can be seen. Fantasyland - 1979
ReplyDeleteGoing back and looking at that pic from 1979 (link above), there is a lady sitting on the foundation and you can even see that the outer edge of it is a different color than the center. The center may even be showing those pebbles (which I think were painted white). Such a trivial little thing, but I wanted to make sure that I wasn't imagining the whole thing! Thanks again for your searches!
ReplyDeleteI do seem to remember a garden hedge planted around the Mr. Toad tower. But that's about all I remember. And who knows. That could be a false memory on my part.
ReplyDeleteOnce again me and my then girlfriend had a particularly unique experience. We were there the last day Skyway operated and the next day after that. Only we didn’t know it was the last day, otherwise we would’ve ridden it all night long. Anyway, we showed up the next day and they were completely gone! I mean, not even a trace of them from what I recall. I remember looking around, and we couldn’t even find the concrete footings. I was kind of in shock! We asked a few cast members and they told us it was only temporary, but later on in the week a friend told me they were gone forever, and how Mickey was the very last “person” to ride it. I can’t even tell you how disappointed I was that we didn’t ride it that last night.
ReplyDeleteThere has never been a skyway in Disneyland.
