Snapshots, September 1968
I admit it... today's snapshots are pretty snooze-worthy. But it's Sunday... the day with the least-amount of readers. Where do you all go?
This one is almost too mundane to write about! Three nice folks take a break on a bench at the entrance to Tomorrowland, next to the swirly flowers (designed, as it turns out, by Rolly Crump). Look at that other photographer, he thinks he is a great fashion photographer. "Come on, work it baby! Yeah!".
Why take one boring photo when you can take two?

Major-
It's kinda hard not to love the first image - if only for the fella attempting to capture A World On the Move-! And there's also 'Gramps, Aunt Polly & Mildred.
Thanks, Major.
I don't think these are snooze-y. It's 1:00 a.m. and I'm wide awake...enjoying the Matterhorn before it got some of it's holes plugged, Alpine Gardens with it's House of the Future patio/gazebo remnant, AND the Rolly Crump designed flower beds, which I never knew he designed until now!
Do I just have vintage Disneyland on the brain, or does that lady in the foreground of the second pic look like she is wearing Sam McKim's Disneyland wall map (the yellow background version) on the lower half of her skirt?
I'm still studying 'em! There's a hidden bobsled in that first pic....it kind of blends in with the rocks. And in that second pic, there's a hidden (sort of) security officer up there in the Alpine Gardens.....behind Aunt Polly. Or is that Mildred, Nanook? I know they both made fabulous pies. Of course Mildred also made wonderful fried chicken and had those neat little drive-in restaurants. Too bad though about her daughter Veda.
@ Tokyo Magic!
Veda-??!! As in Veda Ann Borg-? Yes, indeed. Do you know the great comedy film in which she performed in 1947-?
Nanook, I don’t know if I love the first image; I’ll just say we are friendly acquaintances!
TokyoMagic! you need to drink a glass of warm milk before you go to bed so that you can sleep (yuck, that sounds so gross!). I think I read about Rolly designing those flower beds in Jeff Heimbuch’s book. I think that lady’s dress has an elaborate floral print, but wouldn’t it be great if it WAS a Sam McKim map design??
TokyoMagic! II, hmmm, yes, I see bot the bobsled and the security officer! I guess I need to look at the photos more closely. I’ve never seen “Mildred Pierce”, but I recognize the reference.
Nanook, I only know about her son Bjorn (joke).
@Nanook, I think TokyoMagic! was referring to Veda Pierce who had a thing for her mother's husband Monte Beragon. Ironically Veda Ann Borg was also in the same film playing the role of Miriam Ellis, mistress to Mildred's ex-husband Bert Pierce.
Nanook, "The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer"? I cheated though. I used Wikipedia, which is never wrong. Never. No, I was referring to Polly as in Polly's Pies, and Mildred as in Mildred Pierce who also had a chain of restaurants and one very spoiled and ungrateful daughter named Veda.
Major, that's pretty good that you got the reference if you haven't seen the movie. I think the movie is worth watching just for Eve Arden alone, but it is the role that earned Joan Crawford her Oscar. Plus we get to see Joan be slapped by her daughter.
It certainly shows a different time...that of a quiet and calm period after the Summer madness of crowds. While I was a CM, there was a noticeable drop off in attendance starting on Labor Day itself. Within a couple weeks of that, the park went back to a non-Summer schedule. These were the best 2 weeks for a guest to enjoy all the Summer activities of parades and fireworks.

K. Martinez....Wow, the name Miriam Ellis sounds so familiar, but for the life of me, I can't think of which part of the movie that character appears. Right now, I'm only remembering his "girlfriend", Maggie Biederhoff.
@ TokyoMagic! & Ken-
Although I haven't seen (or projected) Mildred Pierce in a coon's age (no offense intended), I did get your reference. I'll just take any opportunity to plug The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer, an incredibly-funny film (me thinks), getting much of its laughs through a series of often understated lines, sarcasm of the first order and wonderful timing, all delivered with great subtlety from an Academy award-winning screenplay by Sidney Sheldon, of all people. The film is responsible for the deliberately twisted "riddle" which begins: "You remind me of a man. What man-??..."
Okay - I'll abandon my soapbox for now.
Nanook, I wasn't 100% sure if you did. And it's been a gazillion years since I've seen "The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer", but I do remember enjoying it a lot.
TokyoMagic! I mixed up the characters there. Maggie Biederhoff was indeed Bert Pierce's girlfriend as you said. Veda Ann Borg's character Miriam Ellis was the one who shared a dressing room with Veda (Ann Blyth) at Wally’s Bar. It took me a while to find the info, but I did. Mildred Pierce is one of my all time favorite films from the 1940's.
Thanks, K. Martinez. Now I remember her....."I didn't know ya had a mother!" and "Maybe I better send out for a beer. It's full of vitamins!"
Major, thank you for the information about Rolly Crump designing the flower beds. Those were a frequently mentioned feature from childhood. My Mom loved them and never failed to rave about them to her friends who had never been.
Very cool to know this tidbit.
