Monorail & Matterhorn, August 1962

HEADLINE: STUPID BLOGGER ACCIDENTALLY DELETES COMMENTS!
Hey GDB readers (and commenters), I was going through my Blogspot account, intending to delete  100 spam comments. BUT I selected the wrong thing and clicked "delete" on PUBLISHED comments. SO DUMB. I apologize to all of you who have commented over the past few weeks. Fortunately I stopped it as soon as I realized my horrible blunder, so I didn't delete all 8 years of comments, but only the last few weeks. Still, I am upset about it. Sorry, everyone. ANYWAY, on with today's post….

Wowee, you gets yer Yacht Bar, Monorail (the blue one), Skyway, and Matterhorn, all for one low low price! Maybe I should charge more. Let it be known that from this day forward, prices to view this blog have doubled. It's nothing personal, just business.

Every night the cleaning crew had to scrub the Matterhorn from top to base with a specially-formulated "Matterhorn Cleanser" created by Amway*. They used 10,000 gallons of the stuff! It had a nice piney smell, so that was a bonus.

*This is a lie.

  1. Lovely images of "the City On the Move"- before it was know as such. Monorail blue contrasted against the colors of the round Skyway buckets seem just perfect.

Now... about those comments... Damn-! The past few weeks represented my 'best work'. Yeah, right-!

    Thanks, Major.
This is the perfect opportunity for you to create "brilliant" fake comments, and assign their authorship to famous persons. Think of the notoriety GDB would gain-!

  2. OMG, Nanook is right. Your fake comments would be hilarious, I'm sure!! Alas, I can imagine that you must be really ticked off at yourself. Maybe it would help if you grounded yourself for a week or two? Great images today...Amway...LOL!!

  3. Nanook, I really do feel bad (and dumb) about my mistake! After all, nobody HAS to leave comments, and yet many of you do. I like your idea of leaving fake comments… guess I'd have to do them as "Anonymous" or something. But I'm way too lazy.

Connie, I should also punish myself with no TV for two weeks. I would miss the Game of Thrones season finale!

Major, that first photo is awesome! Blue blue blue everywhere, all of it in sunshiney light!

BTW, I'd like to buy 5,000 gallons of that Amway cleaner from you and sell it to my friends, and then they'd want to sell it to their friends, etc. Or we'd end up selling it to our relatives!

Don't sweat the comment deletions, those were simply the

    Just kidding!

  5. Great images today. The yacht bar always sounds like a place you could have a drink and hob nob with Thurston Howell III and Judge Smales (caddyshack).

  7. Fortunately I keep all my comments numbered, for just such an emergency.

  8. I’m glad the comments got deleted; I’m sure I said a bunch of embarrassing stuff about babushkas and imaginary Grandmas.

Love today’s pictures! I never realized just how close the Space Bar was to the Monorail track. That guy sitting at the open window could chuck stuff right into the kitchen. Come to think of it, I never realized the Monorail windows could open, either. Can they still, or have they been sealed shut for our more safety-conscious times? I’ve never tried.

  9. Poor widdle comments! They never stood a chance against the gorillas. That first photo is a total pick-me-up today. Thanks for making me smile :)

  10. Great photographs. I always wondered why the Matterhorn is only at Disneyland. You would think there would be a version of it at DW in Florida.

Does anyone have an answer for the lack of Matterhorn at all the other Disney parks?

  11. @Orange C Native - I think it had to do with the scale comparison against Cinderella's Castle in WDW's Magic Kingdom, however it was once considered for a planned Switzerland pavilion in EPCOT. At this point I think Florida's answer to the Matterhorn is Expedition Everest in WDW's Animal Kingdom.

  12. Bill in Denver, I'm afraid Amway stopped selling Matterhorn Cleaner years ago. Now they just use a Sham Wow and 409 cleaner.

Alonzo, would Mr. Drysdale (Beverly Hillbillies) be there too?

    K. Martinez, hmmm, "frosty"??

Tom, don't ever let those comments fall into enemy hands.

Melissa, my guess is that if something at Disneyland could be thrown, it WAS, at some time. The windows no longer open on the current Disneyland Monorails.

PsySocDisney, they were like a flare, they burned brightly, and vanished. But we will always remember their glow.

OC Native, I'm sure you've seen the concept art that was made for Epcot's proposed Swiss pavilion. I for one think it is a good thing that there's only one Matterhorn Bobsled attraction, that makes it special. Now if only Florida had built the Western River Expedition concept instead of another version of "Pirates", that would have been awesome!

    K. Martinez, I hope you're right; my guess is that, by now, another Matterhorn would be considered pointless, since it is such an old attraction. It is intriguing to think what they might do differently today, though!

Wow, too bad about the comments, Major. Blogger's controls really are confusing. I pretty much quit my blog because I kept forgetting how to do it.

Wonderful pics. I found some old shots of childhood visits, My Dad at the submarine queue with Yacht Bar beyond. Very cool to see here.

I'm off to buy some Matterhorn cleaner, I want that.

  14. No problemo. It makes me not feel so bad on the dozens of dumb things I do all the time :-S

Pretty Monorail Blue today basking in the SoCal sunshine :-) I like how The Yacht Bar looks like it was RIGHT NEXT to the monorail tracks. I never got to enjoy any of their treats, which I am sure I would have (tho I admit that Space Bar is the first one I would visit with my time machine)

Matterhorn always looks so nice....and now I know why! Thanks for that insight.

  15. You mean all those nasty things I've been saying about you Major are now gone!? Oh well, guess I'll just have to start over. ;)

    Major,

No biggie on the error and thank you for your humor admitting it.

(Hand on heart). Your blog is one of my favorites sites to visit regularly. I'm so fascinated with your collection and commentary on the all the items you've shared. Thank you so much for the time and effort you've put into everything. It is really appreciated and treasured.

    One of many thankful people.

  17. JG, I wonder if Blogger's comment controls are different depending on what browser you are using? It does seem like it must vary somewhat. Anyway, I can't blame Blogger, I just made a mistake, plain and simple.

Nancy, originally the Yacht Bar was right where the Matterhorn is now, but they actually picked the whole building up and moved it to where you see it in that photo!

Snow White Archive, oh no, don't worry, I saved all of your comments for blackmail purposes!

Anonymous, wow, what a nice comment! I hope I don't accidentally delete THIS one! Thank you.
