There's just something about this first photo of the Chicken of the Sea pirate ship. But what?? Is it that ominous sky, signaling the arrival of Sauron? Is it the angle? The color? The flavor (requires licking your monitor)? There are some answers that the world will never know.
Susie and her mom resist the urge to spin the wheel. I actually have no idea if the thing even turned, but my spidey senses me it didn't. Susie is bundled up, it must have been chilly.
Major-
ReplyDeleteFor all the reasons you mentioned, and possibly the chapeau-wearing 'gentleman' on the left, and the 'prancing lady' on the right, it just seems to draw one in.
If you could crop-out everything but the ship, the trees and the ominous-looking sky, you could imagine that being a real ship, ready to set sail in search of the perfect Tuna Burger or the elusive Tuna Clipper Salad.
Ahoy, Major-!
Looks like rain. You can rain on my parade but not my tuna sandwich!!!!Arg.
ReplyDeleteGreat! Now I've got a dusty tongue. I should've wiped the monitor first.
ReplyDeleteThere is something compelling about the pirate ship sitting there with nothing behind it; no trees, no tropical setting, no skull rock, nothing. "Back in my day, son, we didn't need all that fancy scenery stuff. We went for the tuna, and that was enough, by cracky!"
ReplyDeleteThe way the light and shadow are hitting the textured pavement in the first picture, it almost looks like water.
ReplyDelete"I've got a tuna boat next to a WHALE,
And it's about to SET SAIL!"
Aside from the suspiciously red coat, the stormy weather is casting a gray Soviet gloom over the whole day. Even little Susatchka is wearing her best babushka to steer great ship of state away from verminous capitalist rodent.
My first thought also was how the pavement looks like water...those people are magic! ;-)
ReplyDeleteYes it does look like water Melissa! I couldn't stop staring at it. And someone oh-so-thoughtfully parked their stroller right in front of the door, so at least that much is familiar ;)
ReplyDeleteNanook, it's true, the people (looking dapper!) definitely help to "make" the picture. Now I can't help imagining that lady walking and picking her feet up extra high like a prancing horse.
ReplyDeleteAlonzo, I really do wonder if it ever actually rained that day!
K. Martinez, if you didn't wipe the monitor before, you definitely need to do it now!
Tom, I'm sure the lack of all that stuff you mentioned was purely due to budgetary constraints, although it looks OK. I still prefer it with the "Pirate Lagoon" look added in 1960.
Melissa, are those lyrics from a real song (modified by you)?? It's like it is right on the tip of my brain, but I can't quite come up with it.
Nancy, but this one isn't nice and sunny, which you usually like so much!
PsySocDisney, at least it's not a fleet of strollers, like you typically see nowadays (dozens, scores… sometimes it seems like hundreds in places like IASW)….
ReplyDeleteI'm fascinated by the framed sign behins Susie and her mother. It just seems like there should be a window there instead.
(The bit about the whale was a play on the B-52's "Love Shack.")
It's fascinating that the ship looks so bright despite the sullen skies.
ReplyDelete@ Melissa. I got me boat and it seats about twenty so hurry up and bring your tuna fish money!!
ReplyDeleteI like the last pic with MR. Ed hangin' snout right next to Babushka girl...Babushka girl, wasn't that a song by Seals and Crofts?
"Babushka girl! You sure do shine! with your headscarf... and hair entwined!"
ReplyDeleteYes, Alonzo, I believe you are correct.
