Fantasyland, March 13, 1958

In a small box of slides labeled "HAWAII", I found nearly 30 vintage Disneyland slides from 1958! How cool is that? Some of them are pretty nice, too.

Like this first one, which isn't anything that special, park-wise; but I love the fact that, although it is bright and sunny in Disneyland, a storm is heading our way. Or maybe the other way, who knows. Still, you can clearly see the rain coming down!

Over in Storybook Land, Pinocchio's Village has been overrun with rampaging giants! They will grind your bones to make their bread. But before they do that, they are going to touch up faded paint, repair cracks, and generally spruce things up.

  1. I'm not so certain about 'ho-hum', as the pictures are interesting for what they lack and what they contain.

The first one, for what's lacking: people - other than in the Skyway buckets. The second one for what its got: giants. (And the ominous sky and the swell contrast of the first one gives it an eerie glow).

    Thanks, Major.

Thanks Major. I quite like that first photograph in particular. That's exciting news about the box of slides. I hope we'll get to see some of those vintage Hawaii pics on some upcoming Random Saturdays?

  4. In the first image, the "CASEY JR RR" floral display really stands out. I also like the diamond patterned and wavy line flowerbeds just below the floral display. The Skyway support tower and Casey Jr. Depot adds a nice touch. Sadly, photos like this aren't possible today due to the lack of the Skyway vantage point.

I look forward to the Disneyland "HAWAII" slides in the future. Thanks, Major.

  5. Hidden treasure!

    I love these unusual angles.

  6. What Melissa said.

That first shot is very dramatic: the raging dark storm in the background, but the bright and shiny Casey Jr RR and Pirate Ship in the foreground. I'd wager if our photographer had turned about 90 degrees to the right, we'd be seeing a nice rainbow. Maybe a double.

Very much looking forward to more out of the Hawaii box!

  7. Nanook, doesn't seem weird that work was being done when the park was open for business?

Pegleg Pete, yes, there are some pretty neat photos of street views and the insides of some tiki bars - not the usual stuff!

Chuck, it is a suburb of Hawaii.

    K. Martinez, I guess it's time to get out the Hawaii slides, I didn't know there was much interest.

Melissa, not only that, but I also found another bunch of 25 slides from '58, including one that shows very early earth-moving for the Matterhorn. Yay.

Tom, I wonder… most of the photos in the group had the park in bright sun, so I don't know if there was any rain to the east. Anyway, there are no rainbow pix, which I would LOVE to have!
