Skyway revisited

It's that time again… time for some more repeats! Today I wanted to feature the Skyway in some form or other. At first I thought I would shoot a video of my interpretive Skyway dance, but realized that it would take too much bandwidth. So you'll have to make do with these photos.

This one was originally posted way back in 2008 (though the photo is from 1962), and is a beautiful view of the Fantasyland Skyway Chalet. The fanciful Swiss cuckoo clock architecture is so appealing, it seems a real shame that this couldn't have been repurposed; at the very least it could have been a nice place to meet princesses. We'll miss you, li'l Skyway station!

This next one was also posted in 2008 (the photo is circa 1960), and is a pretty spectacular shot of Fantasyland as seen from a Skyway bucket that has just left the Chalet for its trip to Tomorrowland. There's a lot to see! It's one of my favorites, and I'm happy to be able to re-share it.

Major-

Talk about spectacular-! That second picture would be hard to beat. Heck - even the sky got all gussied-up in its best fineries. It's too, too divine.

Thanks for the "re-post".

That first picture's a beauty. It really shows off the Fantasyland Skyway Chalet nestled amongst the trees. It's too bad that after standing for 58 years, they might tear it down. Thanks, Major.

Thanks for the repost Major. That second photo is a real keeper! I can feel the excitement of the park as I look down from my bucket - what a view!!

Thank you for re-sharing these.

That second photo makes me feel happy, like my birthday and Christmas and Arbor Day all rolled up into one. I really needed that today. And $110,251.73. You wouldn't be able to share that as well, would you?

What Nanook said....spectacular!!

Not sure why I like the sort of skimpy trees around the chalet, but I really enjoy the look it gives along with the bannister. Just love it! Beauties today! :-)

Poor little doomed skyway chalet. Too sad to even speak.

I concur with the rest, pic two is the bomb. Great angle, Matterhorn, skyway, teacups, a little Casey Jr and a great big shot of the tuna boats ornate arse. This one has it all.

Major - it would also make me feel happy to make enough money to pay that much in taxes...especially if the job involved visiting Disneyland and eating butterscotch pudding.

Alonzo P Hawk - I will be working the phrase "ornate arse" into casual conversation today.

Wow! Those are both fabulous shots, but that second one is just amazing.

That poor guy standing just beyond Frau Bleucher there in the first shot, forever immortalized in a post-sneeze pose.

I love that second photo. It reminds me of the one clear memory I have of visiting Disneyland for the first time, and gazing across the park at the Matterhorn while riding the Skyway. Beautiful! So full of joy.

That second shot is pure magic!!! Wish I could jump into it...but I'd probably fall flat on my face. Oh and by the way, I was really looking forward to that dance video.

And now, the end is here
And so I leave my shiny bucket.
My friend, I'll say it clear -
I'll leave the ride, though I’m reluctant.
I rode a car that's full;
I soared above Autopia’s highway,
And more, much more than this, I rode the Skyway.

Fear of heights, I've had a few -
But then again, too few to mention.
I looked down when I had to, and saw it through without exemption.
I planned my charted course, bought a “D” ticket on Friday,
And more, much more than this, I rode the Skyway.

Yes, there were times, I'm sure you know,
When I just didn’t want to go,
But through it all, I’d set my jaw,
And jump right in that gondola.
I faced it all, and I stood tall, and rode the Skyway.

I've swooned, I've barfed, and cried;
I've had my fill, my share of flying.
I knew, as we took off, I’d be falling and dying.
To think I did all that,
And may I say, in my tongue-tied way,
"Oh, no, never again, I rode the Skyway."

For what is a man, what has he got,
Hung from a wire, in a tin pot?
To dangle high above the pines,
Just like laundry on the line?
I took a stand, at Fantasyland,
And rode the Skyway!

Up to now I'd never imagine anyone would be able to rhyme "jaw" with "gondola".

This is why I love GDB. And the pictures.

Hmmm, somehow my old comment vanished. WEIRD. Well, time to start over.

Nanook, I do love it when there is a blue sky and fluffy white clouds. It makes a surprising difference!

K. Martinez, it just makes me crazy that they couldn't find a new use for the building. Maybe the location just couldn't handle the crowds for a princess meet and greet.

Bill, I have to admit that it is one of my favorites, though I love the first one too!

Chuck, now that I know that Arbor Day factored into your level of enjoyment, I have a real understanding of just how happy you are!

Nancy, I think the skimpy trees add a sense of scale, and even though they were beautiful when they got bigger, they kind of overwhelmed the chalet.

Alonzo, I am mostly bummed because it is one more thing from "Walt's Disneyland" that will be gone.

Chuck again, wow, I haven't had butterscotch pudding since I was a tiny kid! Time to go to the store….

DKoren, glad you liked these.

Tom, I prefer to think of it as mid-vomit! But that's just me.

Connie, please don't jump into your computer. Haven't you seen TRON?

Melissa, whoo-hoo, it's been a while since we've had a song! If only Ol' Blue Eyes was still around to sing it.

Tom again, that is the difference between Melissa and the rest of us shmoes.

Yes that is exactly what I mean. When the trees were smaller like this it was much more appealing to me. When I finally made it to Disneyland in 2001 the trees were a forest and had a hard time seeing the chalet!
