The composition is a bit wonky, but the color in this 1960 slide is beautiful. So... extra points for color, but I am subtracting a point because there are no caterpillar vehicles (from the Alice ride) visible. Note that the Pirate Ship is still in its "swimming pool"; Skull Rock and the more picturesque lagoon will be on their way real soon.
We seem to have an umbrella problem. They sprout up every day, like mushrooms. Not much else to say about this one except that it is a pretty view that I wish we could still enjoy. Is that polka-dotted thing in the lower center of the image a trash can? If so, I've never seen one like it before.
I think that the "polka dotted thing near the bottom center of the image" is an ashtray the top of it is the right color for it to be filled with that kitty litter like stuff you used to see in those big commercial ashtrays ans the proportions seem about right for the ones I remember, that while much plainer than this one, served the same function.
ReplyDeleteI love that half a red Skyway bucket coming into view on the right in the first picture; it gives a sense of motion to the whole line of buckets because you know more are coming up the pike.
ReplyDeleteIf the polka-dotted thing were any bigger I would wonder if it wasn’t a cooler of some kind, but it seems rather narrow for that purpose. Anyway, any picture with Monstro in it is OK by me.
Ah, fantasyland rooftops and tuna breeze, makes me hungry. Monstro too. The old queue position (from the air) looks like he's about to devour all the waiting guests like a batch of krill.
ReplyDeleteHe’s krilling them softly with his song, ending their whole life with his teeth, krilling them softly, with his song…
ReplyDeleteInsert coffee spit take here, nicely done Melissa!
ReplyDeletebigbrian, I know the kind of ashtrays you mean (you used to see them at airports, with the white sand), but I don't ever recall seeing those at Disneyland. Still, you certainly could be right… I don't have a better explanation!
ReplyDeleteMelissa, the Skyway cables also make their own lines that take you toward the "vanishing point", which is pretty dynamic!
Alonzo, "tuna breeze", the new fragrance from L'Oreal.
Melissa, I thought that song was weird to begin with, and now you've made it weirder!
Major-
ReplyDeleteMy vote for the "polka dot pedestal" is for a drinking fountain.
And you know what's goin' on under all them umbrellas, don't ya? Smoochin', that's what!
ReplyDeleteA whale of a pair of images today, Major. Two of my favorite views.
ReplyDeleteYou have posted some very similar views before, (not that I am complaining)and wanted to mention that the aerial view gives a great perspective into the backstage area. The picture you posted several years back showed the elusive Matterhorn Star in it's storage space behind Cinderella's Castle.
Anyway... cool.

So bright and colorful! The way the tuna boat is positioned in the picture makes it looks like it is hanging on the Skyway line, too :)
ReplyDeleteWell I had to try. A little too Escher for me, but...

Nanook, you could be right, though I have never seen one like that before!
ReplyDeleteMelissa, it IS the happiest place on earth, after all.
JG, I would not have even noticed the backstage star in the older photo if it wasn't for the comments!
Nancy, kind of like the Peter Pan's Flight vehicles?
Caspian, cool!
Nanooks comment that the polka dot box could be a drinking fountain might be right, at first when I read his comment it seemed odd, because then why the lighter colored area on top inside the frame of the top square? Well it could be a porcelain sink set into a a drinking fountain box, I'm so used to stainless steel for modern drinking fountains, but designs evolve over time and it's possible that older stand alone fountains did have a small sink set in them like that. Either way i'll bet they did not refrigerate the water in the fountain back then, that is a fairly modern thing isn't it? I seem to remember waving to wait for the water to run for some time at any outdoor drinking fountain when I was a kid, that is unless someone else had just finished with it.
ReplyDeleteCaspian, I want to ride that now!
ReplyDeleteMelissa - haha! Me too.
