With a name like "Skull Rock", you'd think that this feature would be spookier than it appears in these photos. The splashing waterfalls and the tropical plants softened the stern gaze of those empty eye sockets. (At night, it was still pretty spooky though)!
This picture was taken from an unusual angle as our photographer was standing in the cool, shaded grotto behind the falls. It has a certain dreamy beauty...
And following close behind on the heels of The Mine Train Thru Nature's Wonderland for most-missed & fondly remembered...
ReplyDeleteLove both these shots! I mean -- just look at that 2nd picture -- is it any wonder so many of us grew up loving this place???
ReplyDeleteThat little eating spot by Skull Rock was the best dining getaway in the park! I have to mention the meatball sandwiches again. Sigh.
What he said. ^

I agree with Nanook. These shot are full of extinct attractions.
ReplyDeleteSkull Rock the COFS pirate ship and the Skyway. The trifecta of long lost memories.
"I've been gargling for 22 years and my mouth STILL doesn't feel clean! Damn tuna breath."
ReplyDeleteBoth images are awesome, but that 2nd image does it for me! Rare angle and a view I remember well. Man do I miss this era.
ReplyDeleteLove the second photo, very unusual angle and quite lovely to look at.
ReplyDeleteI never got to see Skull Rock in person, sadly. At night would have been particularly creeptastic. Bring it back, Disneyland! (the skyway building plot would work potentially)
Nanook, the reason I started collecting these old slides was to have a piece (of only an image) of some of those "most-missed" attractions.
ReplyDeleteRich T, I honestly don't remember if I ever even went to those grottoes or to the dining area behind the pirate ship, unfortunately.
Tarzman - !
Alonzo, it's not that hard to find photos with lots of extinct attractions these days…
Melissa, now I will always think of a tuna smell coming from the skull!
K. Martinez, I'm glad you liked these!
Lillian K., Skull Rock WAS best at night. In my memories, that area of Fantasyland was quiet at night except for the sound of the waterfalls from the skull… it was really neat!
YAY Skull Rock! That second photo is so dreamy and serene. I love the unique angles. Makes me feel more *there* than the generic straight-on angles.
ReplyDeleteThe angles of the ship, Skull Rock's face, and Monstro are tripping me out in that first shot. I love that so many things in Disneyland are not perpendicular. It gives everything a sense of depth; you really get lost sometimes.
ReplyDeleteSpooky enough for me.....and as always, my favorite Skyway buckets :)
ReplyDeleteI've been away from the blogs for a few days but I come back to find some incredible posts on your blog!!! Wow, I love these!
ReplyDelete#2 makes my mind wander to a magic place.
