Here's another post featuring photos from Disneyland's wardrobe department, courtesy of Huck!
This fellow is wearing the costume that you would see at the Adventureland Shooting Gallery in 1969. Notice the apron thingy that will hold plenty of change! I've never understood the point of those hats that have one brim folded up at the side, but then again there are lots of things I don't understand. Like "Glee".
I love this next one (also from 1969) for its sheer oddity. That green dress was worn at the Cal Arts Museum; Walt Disney founded Cal Arts, fulfilling his dream of a school where artists of all kinds (musicians, animators, dancers, painters, filmmakers, etc) would influence and inspire each other. Cal Arts was established in 1961, but the current campus (in Valencia) started construction in 1969. I'm not entirely sure what the Cal Art Museum was exactly, but assume that it was a gallery that displayed some of the artworks produced at the school.
I left my Fabergé Easter egg in a Peoplemover vehicle, but lucky for me it was turned in over at the Lost and Found. This smiling cast member is half turn-of-the-century lass, half California girl. I wonder why both of today's ladies wear their name tags right in the middle of their necklines?
Huck has more for us, coming up!
I'll just let the imaginations of your readers provide the caption for our gentlemen dressed in the latest "leopard look". Let's just say there are parts of certain cities he might wish to avoid, less he be mistaken for someone cru... (oh, that's right - use your imagination).
ReplyDeleteAfter a brief search..."The reason why the left side of their hat is folded up and pinned is because if they were right handed they drew their sword and as not to slice part of their hat off they needed to pin it."
ReplyDeleteMaybe if you are a pirate that would help, but our Disney host doesn't appear to need a sword for his job. He just needs to look cool!

I think the reason they put the name tags in the center of those period dresses is because that's where ladies of day would have put a broach or cameo.
ReplyDeleteI am sooo enjoying this.
ReplyDeleteThat male cast member is the same guy we saw wearing a Jungle Cruise Skipper outfit in your May 7th post.....and his Skipper's hat was also folded up on the left side. I guess that means he was right-handed!
ReplyDelete@KG, I always thought that too. The name tag then fit into the "period" look as a piece of jewelry.
ReplyDeleteI really like these shots. Thank you Major.

Love the CalArts lady! I used to have a wig exactly like that in my dressup box.
ReplyDeleteHalf turn-of-the-century lass, half cailfornia girl. Where was this description 25 years ago when I tried computer dating. This would have been my ideal girl!
ReplyDeleteNanook, I often wear an all-leopard ensemble, and I am welcome everywhere!
ReplyDeleteBill in Denver, I guess that makes sense, thanks for solving that mystery. What they needed to do is wear a baseball cap. Problem solved!
Katella, you may be right, it's as good a theory as any!
Connie, if you added one more "o" to sooo, I would be happier.
TokyoMagic!, I think I have at least one other photo of this same guy, only he's wearing a tyrolean outfit. Liederhosen and such!
JG, at my theme park, we write our names on an Avery label with a Sharpie.
Melissa, do you think that woman is wearing a wig?!?
Alonzo, there she was, right at Disneyland! You could have gotten a job there and picked up all kinds of wholesome cute girls.
I can tell you from experience that the ascot was royally hated by us Adventureland CMs. It was worse than a necktie on a hot day. They didn't last long thankfully. When we could, they'd end up in our pocket when Supervision wasn't around. For the Gallery, the apron held mostly tickets and we'd also use them to hold shot tubes.
ReplyDeleteAlas, major right place wrong time. She's a cutie but I was only six in 1969. I had game but not that much game.
ReplyDeleteIt's like when I had the hots for Janet Munro after seeing Swiss Family in the mid 70's at the Reseda walk-in theater. Hoplessly smitten but I would have been heartbroken if'n I knew she had already passed away (way too young). Where's that darn wayback machine when you need it!!!!
Janet Munro - wasn’t she a beauty? Knocked me out in Darby O’ Gill.
ReplyDeleteJanet Munro! Very fetching and ingratiating. The Crawling Eye, Darby O'Gill, Third Man on the Mountain, Swiss Family Robinson at least are must sees for the becrushed of Janet.
ReplyDelete->Mr. APH: The photo of our Lost & Found gal was taken in the spring of '73—which meant you were 9 or 10 at the time. You most certainly would have been the envy of all your pals had you and Miss L&F become an item. (Of course, she probably would have been thrown in jail soon thereafter—but why focus on the negative?)
ReplyDeleteHuck, I choose to believe that L&F girl would have saved herself for me until all was on the "up and up"!
