Along The River, September 1963

Cascade Peak was a mountainy thingamajig that you used to be able to see along the River. The waterfalls were great; the Mine Train passed near (and under) them, the Keel Boats and Canoes went as close as was safely possible, and the Mark Twain could jump over them once it really got moving. I think I have a picture of that somewhere.

I'm sure glad that we still have The Columbia; the last time I was at Disneyland, the proud ship was packed. I got on board because I assumed that they must be giving away free iPads or something, but it turns out that it's just an awesome attraction. I still haven't ever gone "below decks" to see the displays, because I never want to miss the scenery. Someday!

  1. But Major, on that ship, below decks is part of the scenery.

    2nd pic to desktop! *sploot*

Knew the Mark Twain was only loafing! ;)

  2. I was just on The Columbia 3 days ago. I love that ship! Like the Matterhorn, it's unique to Disneyland and I hope it stays that way.

I always go below deck while they're still loading, then head upstairs just before the ship starts moving. For a tall guy, it's cramped down there, but always worth a look around.

  4. Major,

Boy have you been missing out. They have been giving away iPads for the past 3 years below the decks. A cast member hands one out to everyone who goes down there. See what you miss out on when you don't go below the deck.

I must say that for the past 15 years or more, every time I have visited Disneyland which is about once every 1-2 years, the sails have never been down. They have always been up. Has anyone seen the sails down in their visits in the past 20 years? I know they use to have the sails down in the 1960's and early 1970's. Is it cost cutting measure by having the sails up all the time?

  5. Below decks is where they keep all the candy and talking monkeys and Klingon pole dancers.

  6. Yeah, they told me they just ran out of the iPads when I went below deck. I was too late, just like the Cars Land CDs that sold out the day before I arrived at the park. Always a day late and a dollar short.

  7. Wonder what event was going on in the second pic to warrant those megaphone speakers. Bet you could hear those suckers all the way in the parking lot.

  8. Chiana, I applaud your *sploot* sound effect. Very "Don Martin" (of "Mad Magazine" fame)!

    K. Martinez, I have no good excuse, except that there might be werewolves down there.

    Nancy, I'm smiling!

OC Native, I'm sure you are right, those sails are expensive, and probably rot away pretty quickly in the Anaheim sun; and it must take some skill to set them correctly, so trained staff would be required. Easier to just forget them!

Melissa, holy crap, if I' known there were talking monkeys I would have gone down there. In spite of the smell!

    K. Martinez again, if you had been there really early, you would have received a free car at Carsland (or is it "Cars Land"?).

Kevin, I'm guessing that those might have been used for the "Dixieland at Disneyland" performances... Louis Armstrong and cats like that would play at night!
