A Knott's Selection

I seem to never tire of looking at photos of Knott's Berry Farm's huge locomotives; and this picture is no exception. I love the colors... a suitably businesslike blue-black, and vermillion and gold highlights. What a beauty!

And now for a different train altogether, here's "Old Betsy", taking a much-deserved rest after many years of hauling ore. You can still see her at Knott's today!

And lastly, let's watch people pan for real gold, for a mere 50 cents. As a kid, I treasured my little plastic vial with its grains of gold; In fact I still have two of them. The question is, what happened to all the others? Lost in the course of many moves across the country I assume.

I never panned for gold at Knott's. I guess we always used our "A" Tickets for the Log Ride, the Mine Train, etc. Now I refuse to do it just out of protest for them destroying the original Pan For Gold area. But I try not to be bitter about it.....

So strange to me, seeing something behind alongside the train. But it looked great. :)

Cute horse sign on the overhang near the Post Office sign. What does the sign under Post Office say? Ghost Town what?

"Pan real gold 50c Get ticket at haunted shack" - great, so you didn't just need 50c you also had to be brave! ;)

Chiana, tickets were available at the "Nugget Shack"....so not only did you need .50 cents, but you also had to be hungry for McDonald's chicken (ha, ha!) The Post Office sign reads "GHOST TOWN CALIF."

I just heard that to make room for another vomit coaster that pan for gold will be replaced. The new claw game for gold is going to be placed in some obscure place so you can't ever find it. I love the smell of progress in the morning, it smells like corporate greed.

Alonzo, that news is not to purty...I have never been to Knott's and that is something I wanted to do when I eventually make it back to California :**(

Was "Old Betsy" a real mine train at one time? She sure had a big engine by comparison to the size of her cars. Rode one once here in PA, when we went to a mine that gave tours. It sure was small in there!

I can hear trains and even see them from my house every day....Im so lucky!! I love trains!

Just a few weeks ago I returned to Knott's for the first time in nearly 20 years. It's changed a lot over time, but many things remained the same (well...the same except for costing a bit more).

I still really enjoyed the Calico Mine Train, Timber Mine Log Ride and the stagecoach ride. A lot of lower tech fun that's very quaint and nostalgic.

TokyoMagic!, so an A ticket would be the same as paying 50 cents? I agree, the new gold pan area is an eyesore, practically underneath a roller coaster.

Chiana, yes, that was right as the Calico Mine Train ride was being built, so things were about to change drastically for Knott's.

TokyoMagic! (again), thanks as always for your Knott's Knowledge!

Ikon Wolf, if the job didn't require wearing pants it would be a dream job.

Viewliner, I thought you'd like these!

Alonzo, they should have a series of signs that keep telling you, "This way to pan for gold", and they eventually lead you out of the park.

Nancy, Old Betsy was certainly a real train, but it has been sitting in Knott's as a wreck for around 60 years (at least), so it's had a long rest.

Major, I'm not sure when the ticket books at Knott's came about (maybe when the wall went up?) but I was looking at an "A" ticket that I have here and Pan For Gold is listed on it along with the other rides I mentioned earlier (also the Corkscrew, Sky Jump and Motorcycle Chase!). The value on that ticket is listed as .85 cents. I just remember that my brother and I never wanted to use up one of our "A" tickets for the Pan For Gold. Now I wish I had!

Nugget Shack! It's be a good name for a fast food stand if it wasn't so bad. ;)

Love the pics of Knott's --- was there in 1995 but all I remember is the chicken dinner!

Nancy -- was that the Pioneer Tunnel mine tour in Ashland, PA? The train is called the Henry Clay! I live about 30 miles from there!

Gojira, if I could afford to, I'd go down there regularly, just for the chicken dinner!
