Cascade Peak, Frontierland

A friend of mine recently gave me a whole bunch of vintage negatives and a few slides, all photos that he took when he was a kid. Cool! Among them was this 1960 image of Cascade Peak, along the Rivers of America.

Of course, many things have changed since then; Cascade Peak is gone, for one. Turns out that it should never have been built out of sugar cubes and Elmer's Glue. Still, the picture is full of interesting details that you just don't see at the park any more, which makes it fun.

  1. Happy April Fool's!

    No foolin'!

My fav bit is the white wing mopping up the peak. Or Shiny Boy watching a bobsled take the falls. Or the Richfield Eagle in the air? What a montage... think I need to lay down...

  2. Love it!

Of course, it perfectly illustrates Walt's famous motto: "Only tell 247 stories at a time."

Thank you so much for such a great image from my childhood! Cascade Peak was always my favorite part of the Park, I'd almost forgotten about the Cliffdivers!

  4. Thanks, Major! You made my day....uh, night.....BOTH!

My favorites would be the dead settler on top of the submarine and the Dumbo car on the the Skyway wire....but I like ALL of it! Is that Walt over on TSI? I could stare at this for probably an hour or so, but it's time for bed.

Happy April Fool's Day to you, Major!

  8. Man, the Floating Teacup was so much better back then, before they put all those Captain Jack Sparrow animatronics in it.

  9. Hooray for the good old days, before the lawsuit-phobic lawyers ruined everything!

The Skyway should have been themed with Dumbo elephants, but I guess it would have only fit with the Fantasyland side of the ride. Love the white wing cleaning up and the Richfield eagle. And of course Walt checking it all out over to the side. Another April 1 classic much appreciated by this Gorilla’s Don’t Blog fan.

  11. An amazing amount of work and creativity. My favorite is the frontier settler with the arrow in his chest... it looks like he's sun tanning on the back of the sub. I always make it a point to visit your site on April 1st. Good job Major.

I like the older version of the skyway bucket thrown in there with all the newer versions. Great job!

When did they tear down that section of Disneyland down? Lots of stuff all in one place. Oh I know. They put up the Princess Greeting area there in 1997. ;)

  19. I totally remember it that way. That was just before they put in Sleeping Beauty Castle. I'd ride on the subs there and then go and hit Indiana Jones. Good old days.
