Beautiful Fantasyland, 1958

I love this first photo of the classic Fantasyland; there isn't any one thing about it that gets to me, rather it is the sum of all the parts. The guests in their 50's clothes, Fantasyland itself (of course), the employee (restaurant worker?) to the right, the crazy trash can, the old mouse-ear balloons with the black ears, and the color.

I'm sure we've all read about these animatronic swans with the laser beams in their eyes. They are as graceful as they are deadly!

  2. Hey Nancy - Hmmm, it DOES look like wood chips or whatever. I just can't believe that it really is sawdust or wood chips, and yet....

I'd love to know what other folks think!

  5. Is it weird that I actually remember that pebbly ground?? I have also witnessed the demon swans during an attack....I wondered why they suddenly disappeared from the Park and were replaced by white, angelic swans..

I think what you are seeing is the textured concrete over most of the ground, with the smooth concrete being there for surface storm water runoff. I'll wager that those "paths" lead to a storm water catch basin. The reason being that at minimal slopes it is easier to control the slope on a small path than on an entire paved area, also, the smoother concrete allows for faster runoff.

  7. Yep, that's just the pebbly concrete along with some non-pebbly concrete. A similar pattern can be seen around the compass in front of the castle (there's a good shot of it in that second pic of your RCA/Walt Disney post on Sunday).

  8. I almost think I remember that pavement, and I definitely remember that Fantasyland.

    I want it.

  9. I guess that pebbly stuff was supposed to simulate cobblestones, which is very "Pinocchio"!
