Happy New Year, homies! Welcome to the futuristic world of 2010. Finally, we have flying cars, wisecracking robot butlers, and silver lamé jumpsuits, just like the movies predicted! Things can't get any better.
And because we are living in the "World of Tomorrow" today, it seemed like a good idea to see the world of tomorrow circa 1957. Work with me!
I never get tired of these vintage views of the entrance to Tomorrowland, and I've seen a few. I tried shaking a stick at all of them, but just couldn't do it. Kodachrome magic has made the sky bluer than blue, fading from cerulean to cobalt to ultramarine to Windsor. The Rocket to the Moon gleams with an atomic intensity, while the rest of T-land reflects the warm sunlight. Another detail that I never tire of is Old Glory with a mere 48 stars! I'll probably stop for an ice cream sandwich before heading over to the "Satellite View of America", what will you have? A Horse Drawn Streetcar passes in front of us... somehow it all works at Disneyland.
Here's a neat view of the Astro Jets; are guests embarking or disembarking? And what's with all the barking? You can see the WenMac windsock over the Flight Circle. I wear windsocks every day for that new-sock feeling that reminds me that everything is swell.
I hope that everybody has a happy, healthy, prosperous New Year!
What a way to begin the New Year. With an aweseome shot of Tomorrowland.
ReplyDeletethats what i was going to say!!
ReplyDeleteloving Tomorrowland as much ever, and looking forward to all youll be bringing us in this new year!
Happy New Year to all! :)
Now the Tomorrowland entrance just needs a big kinetic chunk of space junk plopped down at it's entrance and it will be ready for 2010...oh wait, it already has that.
ReplyDeleteP.S. Happy New Year to you, Major!
ReplyDeleteTomorrowland of 1957 looks a lot more inviting and friendlier than the version we have today with that piece of "big kinetic chunk of space junk" at the front. Good call on that one TokyoMagic.
ReplyDeleteThanks for another great year, Major. I’ve been following the blog for awhile and really appreciate all your time and hard work.
ReplyDeleteI’ve asked you this before, but I forgot your answer. Do you use a scanner to pull these images from slides? If so, would you mind telling me what scanner you use and what resolution to scan at?
Thanks again!
Hi BostonMouse,
ReplyDeleteI use a Canon "Canoscan 9950F", which is now about 2 years old (but does a nice job). I tend to like Epson scanners as well, personally.
I scan my slides at 2400 dpi, which results in a file that is roughly 20 megabytes per picture. Photoshop is basically a necessity for color correction and cleanup, but perhaps a less expensive alternative could work as well (maybe even "Photoshop Elements").
Another great year of classic Disneyland pics. Thanks for all your work Major!
ReplyDeleteYay! Hurray for 2010, hurray for Tomorrowland of 1957 and hurray for the Major! Fun shots. :)
ReplyDeleteBostonMouse, also in case you don't already know about it, GIMP
http://www.gimp.org/
is a free open source alternative to Photoshop or Elements and the like.
A big part of the magic of Disneyland has always been how things "work together" (the streetcar and the rocket, etc). When you walk from land to land it's those DOORWAYS and even entrances, just like this one, that seem to sparkle with the pixie dust. I know I've seen several pictures of various doorways here and they always take me to the days when I dreamed about living inside a tree (kind of Wind and the Willows like)
ReplyDeleteThank you for yet another year of great images. The time (and humor)you put into this is amazing, David, and very much appreciated!
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year to you!
