Snores Aplenty, April 1962

For insomniacs everywhere, I present three slumber-inducing photos from Fantasyland! You've seen lots of pictures like these, ladies and gents. But, in an effort to keep this blog going, I'm going to post 'em anyway.

From our Skyway bucket, we have just left the Fantasyland chalet, and are gaining altitued as we are about to pass over Casey Jr. That kid in the back is staring right at us. How rude.

I guess that this is a somewhat interesting angle on the Pirate Ship. I like the little family crossing the bridge, both mom and daughter look spiffy in their sunday hats.

***Another detail: on the deck of the ship, you can see somebody (hopefully an employee!) opening the soda machine, apparently to give a soda to a kid.

What was the photographer going for here? Seems like a whole lot of stuff, but nothing in particular. You do get a glimpse of the Monorail "roundhouse" in the upper left though.

  1. These aren't the least bit snoozey, Major!

I wish that kid would stop staring....

  2. Lens louse! (the kid)

Is it the angle, or is that a girl or young lady IN the lagoon in front of the galley-on in the top pic?

Park buffs love pics like the last one too Maj - background glimpses, rarely seen areas (Fantasyland station). Plus patchy grass in the landscaping and men polished out in dress shirt, slacks, tie, slick hair and shades just to man the boarding dock for StorybookLand, just as a little bonus.

  3. who can sleep with photos like these?!

not one but TWO photos of the rarely-seen Chicken of the Sea emblem that graces the tuna boat with a bonus glimpse of ourmuch beloved Skull Rock and that lovely seating area, along with a fabulous picture of the Casey Jones entrance AND ticket booth...we have some "major" signage going on here today!! :D

as for the panorama, what a view! i too often seem to forget that there is a "regular" day going on outside thse hallowed grounds (so sad for those ppl, huh?)

    an awesome set today!

  4. Sleepy! Who are you kidding? LOL
The bottom picture with a look at the monorail station house is outstanding.
On a personal note: It is so pleasing to see women dressed up (wearing hats even) on their visit to the park. I long for those days.

These pictures are anything but soporific. And I agree with the above: women are best when they wear hats ... and corsets (that goes without saying)! Oh, for those good old days when Disneyland had a pirate ship and women were more decorative! Alas!

Not at all soporofic! And any photo, like that last one, with a glimpse of the old Fantasyland RR station is very much welcome indeed.

  8. As it is, there has been a pirate ship in the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, that's what you ride in Peter Pan's Flight and I gather the Columbia has served as a pirate ship on occasion (wouldn't using her and having folks masquerading as pirates aboard her offend the folks the Columbia was built to honor?). Hook's ship is appropriate as a symbol of the childhood view. I wonder if Hook's galleon here would have been remade into The Black Pearl if it were still there at the park today. Regardless they might have had another Pirate Ship in the park ever since the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie but for bean counting.

If I had a pirate ship, I would definitely have a soda machine on board! And ladies in hats would walk the plank. The plank to get on board that is, the more the merrier on the Chicken of the Sea!

Beautiful shots of the Pirate Ship. I notice that the carvings on the stern are picked out in color, as opposed to your earlier posts (but later dated photo, where all the carving was the same beige color.

I loved the pirate ship. I bet they are now sorry they didn't keep it, or build a new one, to tie-in with the whole Pirate movie fiasco...

Forgot to mention the great view of the backs of one of my favorite Disneyland features, the miniature Alps in Storybookland.

Funny, they are right by the Casey Jr. track, but i don't remember seeing them from that viewpoint. Guess your attention is focused out away from the car...

Those miniature mountains are some of the best forced perspective in the park, especially with the matterhorn seen beyond, it's just perfect.
