Harper's Mill, September 1961

The murkiness continues with today's photo of the Old Mill (aka Harper's Mill) on Tom Sawyer Island. Corn was brought here and ground into meal, which was then made into delicious corn dogs by the humble people of the frontier. The water that turns the wheel is sluiced in from a higher elevation on the island, a feature that precedes the Swiss Family Treehouse.

Might as well zoom in on that sign.

THE OLD MILL.

NEXT TO THE FORT ITSELF IN IMPORTANCE
TO THE LIFE OF THE PIONEER IS THE MILL.
...AN ESSENTIAL FUNCTION IN THE
EXISTENCE OF THE SETTLEMENT.

FOR THE MILL WAS READY TO GRIND OR
PUMP OR SAW... AND THAT WHICH
BROUGHT FOOD AND COVERING TO MAN
WAS A THING TO BE CHERISHED.

Makes me think of the mill at Knott’s where you could buy bags of (wheat, corn?) flour.

Gosh thanks for the detail shot. And I like Velma's outfit; it's simple, it's not a dress yet it's still stylish, polka-dot shirt and belt and all. And the guy's Hawaiian shirt is nice too.:)
