The Pirate Ship was without a doubt one of the most photographed objects in Disneyland. In later photos the red and white striped sails were often furled, I get the feeling that they had to be replaced occasionally (must have been expensive). If you compare different photos, the sails will have narrower stripes, or broader stripes, or even different colored stripes (yes, it's true).
You can even see a patched area in the lower left corner of one of the larger sails. That's where a cannon ball went through, no doubt. See that "pirate chest" to the right (with "Chicken of the Sea" written on it)? I wonder what it contained? Seems like an odd thing to have just sitting there.
And finally, the less-photographed back side of the ship, along with its crew of bloodthirsty scalawags.
BEAUTIFUL!
ReplyDeleteNeato set of pics of the ol' Chicken of the Sea. She be a good ship, she was. 'ceptin' when there was a sure battle bearin' ahead. Aye they had ta keep a weather eye out for trouble, lest there be a sharp turn unexpected-like, like enough it'd blow a man down. See of all the Sea, 'twas she earned the name: Chicken.
ReplyDeleteOn the deck be a chest. In the chest be a hand. Of one of the hands. Is real hand? Sure'n ye might've seen 'im, if ye knows the tale of Treasure Island. 'tis the cabin boy, what done him...
Or was that chest where Cap'n Hook kept his kit of hooks? Or a tuna sandwich, as a lunchbox. Or was it left there 'cause it was a dead man's chest?
...wait... gettin' my pirate ships crossed more times over than a scheme of Long John Silver. tee hee.
Great pics Major. I can smell the clam chowder now. I'll say it again, the tuna boat should never have been removed.
ReplyDeleteAnybody notice the CM on the "porch roof" over the entrance door? (He shows up best in the second photo).
ReplyDeleteHe is on his hands and knees cleaning... the ROOF!!
This is what made Disney "Disney".
Could it be that the pirate chest is a condiments/cutlery/napkins dispenser?
ReplyDeleteSo fun this. It fits nicely next to the canal boats attraction. Makes sense they had to remove it, tho, wouldn't have fit with the FL revamp. Not very medievil, don't 'cha know...Yo Ho!
ReplyDeleteWow, good eyes, Katella Gate! I didn't notice that guy.
ReplyDeleteThanks for all your nice comments, everybody!
no matter how many pictures we see of this lovely vessel, they are all wonderful! : )
ReplyDeleteI'd never before seen a photo of the back side of the ship. Thanks so much. I truly loved this thing as a kid. I always wanted it to be more than a food place though...but I enjoyed what it was.
