The New Establishment! 1969

After a busy morning of fighting the summer crowds, standing in long lines, escorting kids to the bathroom, and yes, riding the fabulous attractions, a typical Disneyland guest needs a break. Maybe lunch over at the Tomorrowland Terrace. As long as there is a chair, who cares! After settling in for an all-too-quick meal, the spaceage sculptures nearby start to rise into the air. What the?? Hey, there's a stage underneath, and a rock and roll band. Ladies and Gentlemen, The New Establishment!

You couldn't give this band a more perfect name. Hippies loathed "the establishment" but these far-out musicians promised a colorful and groovy NEW establishment. One can only guess at the kind of non-threatening songs that they performed. "Downtown", "Aquarius/Let The Sun Shine In", and maybe "Put a Little Love in Your Heart".

Here's a closer look (from the mosh pit!) at these rock and roll degenerates. Disgraceful!

  1. I love these shots of the Tomorrowland stage with it's colored glass panels and original sculpture on top.....AND we get a glimse of The Carousel of Progress in the background! I've said it before and I'll say it again, I really miss THIS Tomorrowland!

New Establishment hehe! They rock. Yeah. Even Opie, top pic at the railing behind and between the leading lady and the beach boy, is digging it. Course there's flower power on the guitar, but he's keeping his coolness thanks to 'shades. Works for her and her green tambourine too. Let the sunshine in, they're ready!

Imagine, a concert right in front of them and it's quiet enough the ladies in front are easily chatting away. Probably be hard to do that today, hard as scoffin' the fast food without guilt. Love these pics, love the place, love the time.

  6. Memorable images of a memorable design. This was what Tomorrowland is all about.

Thanks Rolly. 40 years later and still well done.

  8. Hey,

Thanks for the info about The New Establishment. I saw them at Disneyland one night in 1967. I was from GA and thought it was really cool when someone in the audience used the term "bitchin". First time I had ever heard that one. I was a 15 year old hick at the time.

  9. I have pictures that look just like the ones posted. I loved this band. I was a teenager (13) but was there to see them every weekend and all summer. My friends and I went as much as we could. Had a huge crush on Mike. Thanks for the good memories.

  10. I posted on your page about the Tomorrowland Terrace that I saw Debbie Reynolds play there in July of '71. My very hazy memory is that Reynolds was the evening show, and the New Establishment played in the afternoon. The New Establishment are best known for performing "Seattle," the theme song for "Here Come the Brides." It currently airs on AntennaTV early Sunday morning. The first season played an instrumental of the song over the titles, and the second season included the New Establishment's vocals.

  11. Ted, thanks for sharing your memories of seeing Debbie Reynolds at the Tomorrowland Terrace. "Seattle", I don't know that one, though I vaguely remember "Here Come the Brides". I'll have to look on YouTube to see if the theme song can be found (the second version, of course)!

  12. I was a Materhorn climber from '66 to '69 and we share the dressing room with the bands....the drummer (Wilson ?) would warm up using various chairs and trash cans....I told him many times, "he should take that stuff up on stage." Great times.
