Frontierland, July 1961
Things come and go at Disneyland...here's one that's gone, the fabulous Cascade Peak. I don't have a real list of "most missed" stuff, but this would be on that list if I did! It wasn't a ride, rather it was eye-candy on the river and a brief part of the Mine Train (see it there?). For those of us who were used to seeing it, it's still kind of a shock that it's gone.
On busy summer days you'll still see the Canoes plying the river...yet another attraction that I have never been on! It's impressive to see a canoe that holds 18 people at once. This ride does look like fun, especially if you got to come anywhere near the Mark Twain...that extra-low persepective would be interesting. I believe that this canoe is passing the old fishin' pier, where you could catch real trout.

As a former CM that worked both rides in this post, I experienced a unique perspective of Cascade Peak. It was a great landmark which helped make you feel that you were truly out in the wilderness. And on hot days, the cooling spray was a joy. Getting the canoe close to the falls was a thrill for most guests. It is a very obvious missing element in today's park landscape.
Wow, I never thought about that...getting close to the waterfalls would be amazing! In fact, what I would really love is to take a canoe around the river when nobody is in the park.
Speaking of canoes, do they still have the cast-member races each year? What does/did those races consist of?
Beautiful pictures.
In reply to Major, going out on the river alone would be a hoot. Although steering and "motoring" one of those monsters alone would be quite an effort. And while they don't sink, I was on a canoe that did fill with water when everyone stood up together en mass and then jumped out into the river near TS Island back in '74 adjacent to the Frontierland dock. Now that is memory that few can say they've experienced!! Thanks for bringing the memory back.
Major--- Next time you're at the Park I insist you take a canoe ride. Do it before they are retired once and for all...It's a lot of fun...
