Today's images were generously donated by my friend Mike and his mom Alexandra (who took these photos back in 1971). Lucky them, they have a nice bunch of pictures of the family at Disneyland. Apparently nobody ever brought a camera when my family went.
Among their slides are some of the nicest images of the Golden Horseshoe Revue that I've seen. This is a fantastic, lively portrait of Betty Taylor as "Slue Foot Sue". Betty took over the role of Sue in 1956 (replacing Judy Marsh), and she stayed with the show for over 31 years, retiring in 1987.
Here's Betty again, holding a heart-shaped mirror. From what I've read she used it to search through the audience for...something. Vampires maybe? I have no idea! If anybody remembers this part of the show, please let us know what's going on.
Since good photos of the Golden Horseshoe Revue are scarce, I'm including this view of some of the dancers....
...and the band that accompanied all of the performers. Don't be eyeballin' me, piano man!
Many thanks to the Grazianos for sharing these great vintage photos! Look for more Golden Horseshoe stuff tomorrow.
As I recall, Betty would search the audience for "her man", and would shine the mirror on all the males in the theater. She would then make comments as she went along such as, this one is too young, too old, etc. It was all in fun and provided a little audience interaction.
ReplyDelete"I'd better take a glance into this mirror, and check to see that ev'rything's in place.
ReplyDeleteFor I've heard that city life's a competition, and I must be sure I'm ready for the race.
Yes, gentlemen I want you all to know... I'm looking for a BIG CITY BEAU!"
Ah, 1971! I was the designated escort for the birthday girl at a Sweet Sixteen party at the Park that year--a very special event. Her dad was a Disney bigwig (hint: he was part of the clandestine team that bought up Florida land) and we got the royal treatment. Lagoon-side dining at the Blue Bayou, multiple ticket books (I still have some of them), all gratis.
ReplyDeleteBut the highlight for me was at the Golden Horseshoe. We sat in the box at stage right, and Betty Taylor came over, perched on the rail and sang a song "to" me while flirting up a storm. (Big sigh)
It's one of my favorite Park memories, topped only by meeting Walt.
Thanks for the fab pics.
Wow, this brings back wonderful memories as I am the blonde in the middle. Dreamfinder has the words to Betty's song exactaly right! Betty was a star and the audience loved her. Wally Boag and Fulton Burley were such great vaudvillians that they made the show so fun that people would come back year after year just to see them. I had the perfect job!!!
ReplyDeleteBonnie, thanks for your comment, it's very cool that you found a photo of yourself! The Golden Horseshoe Revue is such an important part of Frontierland (and Disneyland) to fans like me.
ReplyDeleteYou asked about the heart shaped mirror that Slue Foot Sue used in the Golden Horse Shoe Review. I remember it well. She would be singing a song having to do with looking for a boy like you. While she sang she would reflect the spot light off the mirror and use it to look around the audience for some guy that she would totally embarrass by sitting on their lap and singing to them. I remember it so well since my middle son was 10 at the time and totally star struck with Sue in the show. She spotted him and came over to him and asked how old he was. When he said 10 she said just my luck, too young, but when you turn 11 give me a call. On my sons 11th birthday, first thing in the morning when he got up, he said when can we call her. I said who?, totally forgetting the show from months prior. He said Sue Foot Sue, she told me to call when I turn 11.
ReplyDeleteGary, thank you for your fun recollections of the original Golden Horseshoe Revue!
