This blog has nothing to do with gorillas (though I love 'em)...fellow bloggers have inspired me to share vintage images of Disneyland from my personal collection. But don't be surprised if you see something from a World's Fair, Knott's Berry Farm, or someplace else that is cool!

World Clock, June 1958
The Clock of the World was an icon of early Tomorrowland, somehow managing to be both futuristic and delightfully 50's in its appearance. It is seen in some pre-opening artwork looking virtually identical to its finished form...I wonder where the idea and design came from? The clock stood at the entrance to Tomorrowland on opening day, and it was finally removed in September 1966 for the original "New Tomorrowland". I wonder if any pieces of it still exist...the thought of it getting the wrecking ball is painful!
For those who are interested, I provided a nice detail of the top of the clock with the moon-and-sun motif, as well as a salute to spaghetti strainers.
Wow! I'd never noticed it before, but it does look like a colander! Very nice photo!
ReplyDeleteI'll never be able to look at the Clock of the World the same way again! Thanks for the post -
