This blog has nothing to do with gorillas (though I love 'em)...fellow bloggers have inspired me to share vintage images of Disneyland from my personal collection. But don't be surprised if you see something from a World's Fair, Knott's Berry Farm, or someplace else that is cool!

Cascade Peak
This is a nice shot of Cascade Peak with the Mine Train going past the waterfall (is it called Big Thunder Falls?). I admit that this is not the most amazing photo, but I do like one tiny detail...on the horizon, just to the right of the center, you can see a building under construction (it's hard to make out through the haze). That is the facade of the Haunted Mansion! Man, I sure wish I had a closer shot of it as it was being built, but for now this is the best I have. According to doombuggies.com, the Mansion (and by this he meant the house itself) was completed sometime around the end of 1962, so perhaps this slide was taken during the spring or summer of that same year.
Actually, this is an amazing shot! You rarely see Cascade Peak taken from this angle. Did you know that early on (so if this is 1962, then it qualifies) that there were animatronic Bighorn Sheep on it? You can almost make some of them out on this slide. I'd like to see it zoomed in, though! Both Patrick & I have some shots of the Mansion under construction, somewhere I'm sure...

ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful slide! When I first saw it I almost thought it must be a vacation slide from elsewhere. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteTangaroa, I looked at my original scan up close and can't make out any bighorn sheep. I am coming to the conclusion that my scanner is not up to snuff anymore, and am looking to buy a new one in the next month or so. Maybe when I rescan some of these, some details will become more clear. I love the details!
ReplyDeleteNope - that's the Haunted Mansion framework....
