Snoozle numero uno is a wonky photo of the Submarine Lagoon, from December, 1964. If it wasn't for those glowing red lights, I might have assumed that the Submarine ride was down for maintenance. This isn't the worst photo, but it ain't great either.
Next, from "sometime in the 60s" is this bright, sunny photo of Main Street Station, with the Ernest S. Marsh coming in for a landing. "But Major, this picture is pretty OK, why is it a Snoozle?". BECAUSE I SAID SO!

Maybe the Subs are down, and the red lights mean their batteries are being recharged. :-p At first I thought this pic was going to be real blurry, but it's not very blurry at all... just dark and murky. I do like the slight pinkish glow.
ReplyDeleteWell, it IS a pretty good photo... a little washed out... and a bit blurry... but still good. What kind of tree is that on the left? At first I thought it was an orange tree, because of the fruit. But the trunk doesn't look like an orange tree to me, nor do the leaves. Maybe the 'fruit' is actually blossoms? Is it an olive tree?
I suppose these are Snoozles, because you said so... and it's your Blog. :-b Thanks, Major.
JB, I think that tree in the second photo is a Paperbark Tree. There is also one of those just to the right of Monstro, in Fantasyland, which has been there for decades and started out as a sapling.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the Sunday serving of Snoozles, Major!
The Subs Snoozle is quite nice with the rockwork seeming to have a warm glow. Even the monorail beam/track above the falls seems to have taken that same warm glow.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Major.
Photo 1 has me on the edge of my seat because it means I get to ride the subs! Those red lights mean our toast is almost ready.
ReplyDeletePhoto 2 has a beautiful transient quality, we are just glancing up before passing through the entry tunnel, hearing the train bell and the Announcer’s Voice, preparing us for our day in the Park. I wish it were true.
Thanks Major, hoping your electricity comes back soon.
JG
I like how the lines of the tops of the subs echo the lines of the railings. Very artistic - a study in gray!
ReplyDeleteIn the first photo, I'm thinking that it's taken at sunset, when one gets that warm cast over everything from the last rays of sunlight. I find it difficult to capture on film. Are the red lights on the subs perhaps marker lights so they can be seen in the dark depths of the ocean?
ReplyDeleteIn the second photo I love how the train is very colorful against the (appropriately) muted tones of the train station. These guests are probably those who sleep-in, have a long breakfast, and perhaps a morning swim before showing up to Disneyland around Noon. ;)
"I like how the lines of the tops of the subs echo the lines of the railings."
ReplyDeleteMelissa, I'm now hearing a song in my head, and I bet YOU could re-write some fun lyrics to it.
"Signs" by Five Man Electrical Band:
Line, line
Everywhere a line
Rockin' out the scenery
Breakin' my mind
Here's where you come in, Melissa... :o)
Here's where you come in, Melissa... :o)
DeleteLine, line
Everywhere a line
Rockin' out the scenery
Breakin' my mind
"Ride this," "Don't ride that,"
Can't you see there's a line?
And the sign says, "Everybody waits two hours
Unless you can pay pay more."
So I jumped on the fence and I yelled at the mouse
"Hey! I paid at the door!
What does it cost?" "Well, that depends;
You don't really need to know."
"If Walt was here, he'd tell you to your face,
That's not how it oughta go."
(OK, that got a little more bitter and jaded than I meant it to on a Sunday afternoon!)
JB, I guess because I always see photos of the Subs during the day, the little red lights are a detail that I was not aware of until today’s picture, so that’s something. I don’t know what kind of tree is in photo #2, but I think it’s still there? I just remember that fairly recently I went to Downtown Disney, and strolled over to the entry gates of Disneyland. Between the big wrought iron fence and that tree, I had a hard time getting a good photo of the train station!
ReplyDeleteTokyoMagic!, do they make paperbark books out of Paperbark trees? Please send me $2000 for that incredible joke.
K. Martinez, I admit that the warm glow is pretty nice! Can it be called “Alpenglow” when it’s not in the Alps?
JG, mmmm, toast. Should I just put butter on the toast, or get fancy and put cinnamon sugar on it too? It’s funny how all of those memories of the train’s bell (and whistle), the announcer’s voice, and even the music playing on Main Street all seem so vivid.
Melissa, if Whistler had painted Submarines, it would have looked like this!
Omnispace, yes, the sun must have been seconds from completely setting - or perhaps it had sent, and the warm glow was reflected from some clouds. I think the red lights repel sea serpents, but I’m no expert. I like to get to Disneyland when it opens, but my GF does not, which is always frustrating to not get there until 11:00. We’ve lost precious hours!
Lou and Sue, good grief, I know the song “Signs”, but sure could not have told you that the band was “Five Man Electrical Band”!! I feel like this is the first time I’ve learned that name!
Brilliant, Melissa!
ReplyDeleteMelissa, ha ha, you stepped up, even though you got "homework"! You aren't alone in feeling bitter and jaded at the various uncharges. "Walt Disney dreamed of a place where rich parents could have more fun with their families than less-rich parents".
