Frontierland, April 1963

Sometimes you'll take a photo of your kid, and it will turn out to be a treasure to be shared among all of your friends and relatives. And other times it'll turn out like this. It's not her fault, she was caught off-guard, squinting into the sun, pigtails so tight that she can't think straight. The bangs mean mom cuts her hair. She's somewhere in Frontierland, back when they had room for things like random patches of grass. It looks like a dirt path was added, probably where people were cutting through anyway... maybe it would eventually be paved.

This looks like an off-the-cuff shot taken as the Mark Twain was about to get underway. With the flags and the crowds, it's like a scene from a movie.

  1. I'm looking forward to hearing what Melissa has to say about our little gal in the first pic.

Second pic: That lady is swimming 'up stream.'

"... pigtails so tight that she can't think straight. The bangs mean mom cuts her hair".

Actually, 'tightening' "Susie's" pigtails is how she sets the 'trim' on her bangs. Pretty clever, Mom-!

That certainly is quite the crowd packed-in like sardines standing by the mark Twain/Columbia dock. I wonder what was happening over by the entrance to the Golden Horseshoe - perhaps a 'staged' shoot-out...

    Thanks, Major.

    1. We saw 'little Susie' along with her uncontrollable bangs back on the September 8th post.

  3. Miss "Not Her Fault" has white bows on her boa constrictor pigtails. It makes them look like those 'booties' that fancy chefs use to cover the ends of poultry drumsticks, crown rib roasts and lamb chops. Not sure if that means she's ready for the oven or just about to go in. The boy behind her in the panda-skin sweater didn't fare much better; schlumping along, with pretty much the same facial expression as the girl. His hair is too short for pigtails though. There is a white ostrich plume on an Alpine hat that takes up most of the left edge of the pic.

Looks like an awful lot of people in that crowd! Are they just walking through Frontierland? Maybe they're in a hurry to get into the queues for Pirates and the HM... which won't exist for another six years, give or take. These same people will line-up along Main Street five hours before a parade is scheduled to begin. Up on the second deck of the Mark Twain, a guy in a white jacket is holding something dark in his hand. It looks like a blow dryer. I suppose it's a camera of some sort? Maybe it's a radar gun.

Sue, after reading your comment, it only took me a half second to spot the lady swimming upstream... she doesn't stand a chance!

    Nice people-watching pics, Major. Thanks.

So authentically rustic out there in the wild west.
Note to grumbling self...it's always been crowded at Disneyland.

  6. I wonder what Miss Pigtails was saying? Maybe something cute prompted the impromptu photo?

Maybe the Golden Horseshoe show had just let out? Or maybe they are watching a gun fight? Disney used to do those in front of the saloon? People are craning their necks to look left so it seems something is going on besides the Brownian motion of a typical crowd. Why isn’t the photographer looking that way too?

Enigmatic photos today, Major. A real puzzle.

  7. Lou and Sue, I’m sure Melissa will make us all proud!

Nanook, as you tighten the pigtails, you hear ratcheting clicks. I was thinking the same thing about the crowds in photo #2, everybody is looking to the left, it must be a shootout!

Nanook, yes, we have seen Li’l PIgtails before.

JB, I always wondered about those “booties” used on a rib roast or on drumsticks. I guess the bones were considered too gruesome and they needed to be “prettied up”? There is nothing softer than a panda-fur sweater, that kid is SO comfortable! As Nanook and I both surmise, there was probably a shootout going on at the Golden Horseshoe, they did those for a few years. I wonder why they stopped? Complaints from mothers? Did the crowds get too big? It really does look like that guy on the Mark Twain is holding a pistol!

    JB, hmmmmm!

MS, there were certainly crowded days at Disneyland, but nothing like your average visit today.

JG, a gunfight is the only explanation that makes sense, everybody is clearly trying to get a view of it. You can just tell. I guess the photographer was easily distracted, as when the steamboat passed??

  8. At first I thought the pigtailed little girl was running through Frontierland, and I got the Little House on the Prairie theme stuck in my head, waiting for her to faceplant among the wildflowers. But then I knew I'd seen that pinafore with the waist ties before, and I went scrolling back until I found her in a post from early September with the rest of her family. She looks like she's a bundle of energy!

  9. Melissa, my sister used to watch Little House on the Prairie, and I guess it's just me, but MAN, that music was like nails on a chalkboard. Over-the-top strings, it really drove me crazy! CRAZY, DO YOU HEAR? Frankly I am impressed that Junior Gorillas remember posts from a month ago.

That's an obscure reference, Melissa. Way back to the Bush era.
