I have a swell pair of Leftuggies™ for you today, starting with this pretty photo of Tomorrowland, circa August, 1958. The sky could hardly be bluer! But it was almost certainly very hot. The Clock of the World is known to all of us, but for normies it is completely forgotten. And it's too cool! Notice the little sign in the planter that says "World Time", just in case people had no idea what that giant cocktail shaker was for. Meanwhile, let's go into he Hall of Chemistry, where there will hopefully be bubbling test tubes full of colored water.
This next one is undated, but probably 1970-ish; we're in the Plaza (I guess, there's not a lot to go by), and guests are thrilled to see Pinocchio. It looks like that little boy might be saying something to Pinoke, but what?? I assume that's Dad hovering close by (with a big smile).
JUST FYI... I will be out of town for the weekend, starting today, visiting some family. It will be the first get-together since my mom passed, which makes me sad, but I know we will have a good time being together.

There's the Procter & Gamble logo again atop the Clock. The androgynous kid in aqua shorts on the left has me befuddled. I'm guessing 'girl' because of the frilly shirt, but...
This really IS a nice photo, Major! Bright and colorful, iconic Disneyland.
The sweet little kid is politely asking Pinoke, "What the f*** are you, anyway?" Kids say the darndest things. Blue Shirt Kid on the right is about 2 seconds away from being hauled off to the Churro Mines for messing with Pinoke's feather! The guy in back, on the right, is speaking into his walkie to inform security, "We've got a 10-54 in progress at the Plaza. Minor in blue shirt is attacking CM in Alpine costume; over." Meanwhile, the kid in the blue stripy shirt has a pack of Winstons in his pocket.

I think Nanook is right about the second one being WDW, because of the bigger areas of both concrete and grass. Also, we can narrow down the date to '75 or '76, based on the "1776-1976" shields on the lampposts in the background.

Here's more confirmation that the second pic is WDW. The lady behind Pinocchio is holding a WDW Guidebook for either 1975 or 1976. Both guidebooks had this same GAF ad on their back covers. (I posted the entire WDW Guidebook for 1975, back in March of 2025.)

Ah, the World Clock, because entropy is the same everywhere. I wonder who came up with that screwball design, and who decided to put it in the program? Were instructions provided? Looks like a busy day in 1986.
ReplyDeleteOh good, I’m not crazy. I can’t fit photo 2 into any mental map of Disneyland in any era, so I’m relieved to hear it’s WDW. That kid is headed for the churro mines for certain. The Judge from Mr. Toad will put him away.

ReplyDeleteNew Tomorrowland is awesome, of course, but this version is pretty darn great, too. All the shapes suggest motion, with all the parabolas and arrows, and balls that look like they're flying. And I've always loved the dynamic contrast between the stark, futuristic sun and old-fashioned moon atop the Giant Jigger, er, I mean World Clock, and how they subtly suggest the constant motion of time from the past into the future.
I love the purposeful stride of the father and ruffle-bloused daughter! They know where THEY'RE going next, I bet, unlike us poor chumps waffling over our ticket books.
I was gonna say the second picture looks like it could be in a Pictorial Souvenir or other publication, but I guess the company wouldn't want to encourage feather-snatching! The little boy looks like he might be asking Pinocchio where the little boys' room is, but at that age, the "I'm so excited" pose and the "I have to go" pose are kind of similar. Some of the kids must have spilled Citrus Swirl on their striped shirts and had to change. I remember a lot of ladies at church looking like the nice lady in the powder-blue pantsuit.
@Nanook, it looks like the Crystal Palace to me. I was trying to catch a glimpse of the Swan Boat dock (RIP) through the branches of the trees, but my eyes just aren't good enough.

I think the WDW view may have been taken in front of the bridge to Liberty Square in the northwestern part of the hub. If you tilt up directly above the boy reaching for Pinocchio’s feather, you can see some turret spires poking above the trees. To the extreme right is another structure that may be in the same architectural style as the castle. The berm in the background could be blocking part of the Fantasyland/Liberty Square backstage areas.
ReplyDeleteI’m not wedded to that interpretation (Mrs. Chuck reminds me that bigamy is illegal in all fifty states) and think this also could be on the eastern side of the plaza. I have a vague recollection of a berm over there, too. This area is so different today and the historic imagery of those obscure corners is surprisingly hard to find.
