Two From July, 1958

Here's a pair from the Summer of 1958, starting with this nice one taken by somebody who'd hiked to the top of Holiday Hill (without supplemental oxygen). Say! The view is pretty swell! We get a nice panorama looking toward Sleeping Beauty Castle, with some green awnings to the left that were outside the Monsanto House of the Future. The stacks of the Mark Twain can be seen, and way in the distance is the Holidayland tent.

Next, we're aboard one of the river craft, perhaps a Keelboat? We're low in the water, but our photographer could have been seated at the bow of the Mark Twain of course. The Canoe loading docks are to the left, and a Raft to Tom Sawyer Island is just returning to the mainland. The Indian Village looks busy!

Major-
That shot from Holiday Hill - (aka: Echo Mountain; Mount Disneyland; Snow Mountain; Lookout Mountain; and even Valterhorn-!) is quite lovely.

Thanks, Major.

This is a nice aerial view from the soon-to-be icy slopes of the future Matterhorn. We haven't seen very many pictures from atop Holiday Hill. What is that yellow and black thing with the pennant flying overhead on the right?

In the second pic, this must've been pre-AED; not an exploding duck in sight! Maybe a couple of other birds, but no ducks. Animatronics, especially the exploding kind, were still in their infancy.

Thanks, Major.

I was wondering the same thing. As we can see the 'parapet' above the Mr. Toad show building, and even though the colors don't really work, I'm thinking it's the "finial assembly" atop Fan 2...

It's interesting to see a raft approaching or leaving the Indian Village dock. I think some of the early maps even have that dock labeled as "Indian Village Rafts."

Thanks, Major!

Photo 1 is interesting for the vantage point, and oddly, for the lack of color. Maybe the photo or slide is washed out by age? Or have my senses been corrupted by the Barbie Pink, turquoise, and lavender modern shades so that I can’t perceive the old look? Fun to see that big circus tent and the Mark Twain.

Surprising to see a big crowd in the Indian Village, maybe it was new, or something special happening? Those canoe slots look inefficient, but the angled dock makes it easier to work on the engines. And those older canoes did have a reverse gear so maybe it’s not so bad.

Thanks Major!

Nanook, I don’t believe I’ve ever heard the names “Echo Mountain”, “Mount Disneyland”, or “Valterhorn” before!

JB, wow, I wish they’d built the Future Matterhorn! All stainless steel and neon, that would be so cool! Years later, a robot yet would be added. I was going to posit a guess for the “yellow and black thing with the pennant flying overhead”, but I see that Nanook said the same thing I was going to say!

Nanook, now I’m wondering if that could be Fantasyland Station? It’s a mystery…

TokyoMagic!, good observation, I didn’t even really pay attention to the raft. There were at least three different raft landings on both TSI and the “mainland”, I’ll have to dig out my old maps to check them out.

JG, I do think that the slide is a little washed out, as frequently happens. Perhaps I should have spent some time trying to correct it, but oh well. That being said, we’re seeing a lot of trees! I think that the Indian Village was pretty popular, at least for the first decade of its existence. It was removed when I was a child, but it still baffles me how my family never managed to make it to the Indian Village! I always thought that the angled dock was pretty clever, especially making brake jobs easier.

I recently stumbled across those odd names in The "E" Ticket Magazine, so presume their "authenticity" to be backed up by fact...

That yellow & black ( you are seeing color distortion) “turret” with the pennant is the top of KING ARTHUR CAROUSEL …. Note the distance from the castle.

@ MIKE-
You're probably correct; but I ruled that out as it seemed just a bit too far away.

And here I was thinking that "tournament tent" roof we were seeing was for the Mickey Mouse Club Theater. But when searching for early images of it, it looks like it might have always been blue. But look at this early image of Snow White's Adventures. It shows an orange tent with a black "crown" thingy on top. Even though it seems to far to the right in Major's image for it to be that, I think it is a match, and it's probably just the distance and the angle of the photo that is throwing us off:

Make that a yellowish-orange tent!
